Ticks can get on you when you brush against grass, shrubs, leaf litter, or wooded vegetation. They do not fly or jump.
Instead, ticks climb onto clothing or skin, move to a sheltered area, and attach for a blood meal that may last from minutes to several days.

Most tick bites cause only a small, temporary skin reaction. An attached tick can transmit bacteria, viruses, or parasites that cause tick-borne diseases.
Remove the tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers, clean the area, and monitor yourself for symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends watching for changes in your health after a bite because symptoms may appear days or weeks later.
Immediate Effects of an Attached Tick
A tick may cause little noticeable sensation because its saliva can have numbing properties. After removal, mild redness, itching, or swelling is common, while breathing difficulty or rapidly worsening swelling requires urgent medical attention.

How Ticks Attach and Feed
Hard ticks, members of the Ixodidae family, grasp your skin with mouthparts and remain attached while feeding. They may wander to warm, protected areas such as your scalp, ears, armpits, waist, groin, or the backs of your knees.
As feeding continues, the tick becomes an engorged tick, visibly larger and rounder. Prompt removal limits feeding time, though the risk of disease depends on the tick species, pathogen, location, and length of attachment.
Normal Skin Changes After Removal
You may notice a small red bump, mild swelling, tenderness, or itching around the tick bite. These changes usually reflect local irritation and should gradually improve.
Clean the area with soap and water, then monitor it for several days. A persistent or expanding area of redness, increasing pain, drainage, or a new rash warrants medical advice.
When an Allergic Reaction Needs Emergency Care
Some people develop an allergic reaction to a bite or tick exposure. Widespread hives, swelling of your lips or tongue, wheezing, dizziness, vomiting, or trouble breathing can signal anaphylaxis.
Call 911 immediately for suspected anaphylaxis. If you have prescribed epinephrine, use it as directed and seek emergency care.
Certain lone star ticks have been associated with alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to a carbohydrate found in mammalian meat and some animal-derived products. Discuss delayed allergic symptoms with a healthcare professional.

A tick-borne illness may begin with nonspecific symptoms, including fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or joint pain. Track when the bite occurred and seek care if symptoms are severe, worsening, or accompanied by neurologic changes.

Common Flu-Like Warning Signs
Watch for fever and chills, headache, unusual fatigue, muscle pain, joint pain, swollen glands, nausea, or a general flu-like feeling. Symptoms can develop days or weeks after exposure, and you may not remember being bitten.
Contact a clinician promptly if you become sick after a bite, especially if you live in or recently visited an area where tickborne diseases occur.
Rashes and Skin Findings
An expanding rash deserves medical evaluation, even if it does not look like a classic bull’s-eye rash. Lyme disease can cause erythema migrans, while Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, tularemia, and other infections can produce different patterns.
A small, stable red mark directly at the bite site is more consistent with local irritation. Photograph the area, mark its outer edge with a pen, and note whether it expands, becomes painful, or develops additional spots.
Weakness and Tick Paralysis
New muscle weakness, clumsiness, numbness, facial changes, difficulty speaking, or trouble walking requires urgent evaluation. A toxin from an attached tick can cause tick paralysis and symptoms may progress upward from the legs.
Breathing or swallowing difficulty is an emergency. Remove the tick if you can do so safely, then call 911 or go to an emergency department, because weakness may continue until the toxin clears.
When a Bite May Lead to Infection
Ticks can transmit bacteria, viruses, or parasites during feeding. Your risk depends on the tick species, geographic area, season, attachment time, and whether that tick carried a pathogen.

Diseases and Their Typical Patterns
Potential illnesses include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, relapsing fever, and southern tick-associated rash illness.
Patterns overlap, so you should not self-diagnose from a rash or symptom alone. For example, Lyme disease may cause an expanding rash, while babesiosis can cause fever, fatigue, anemia, or dark urine.
RMSF may cause fever and a spreading rash, though a rash is not always present.
Why Location and Timing Matter
The same-looking tick bite can carry different risks across the United States. Your clinician considers where you were exposed, when the bite occurred, the likely tick, whether it appeared engorged, and how long it may have been attached.
Symptoms may start within days or take several weeks. Tell your clinician about travel, hiking, camping, yardwork, pets, and any photograph or saved tick.
Medical Evaluation and Treatment
Seek medical advice for an expanding rash, fever, severe headache, marked fatigue, unusual bruising, shortness of breath, confusion, or worsening illness. Testing may be useful in some situations, though early tests do not detect every infection.
A clinician may prescribe doxycycline or other antibiotics when bacterial infection is likely. Do not take leftover antibiotics or delay antibiotic treatment while waiting for symptoms to become severe.
Your clinician can also decide whether preventive antibiotics are appropriate after a specific high-risk Lyme exposure.
Safe Removal and Future Prevention
Prompt, careful removal works better than trying to burn, smother, or chemically irritate a tick. Afterward, document the bite and reduce future exposure with clothing, repellents, route choices, and full-body checks.

Removing a Tick With Tweezers
Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward slowly and steadily without twisting or jerking.
After removal, clean your hands and the bite site with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Do not apply petroleum jelly, nail polish, heat, or other substances to force the tick out.
If mouthparts remain and you cannot easily remove them, clean the area and ask a healthcare professional for advice.
What to Record and Monitor
Write down the date and location of the bite, where you were outdoors, and when you noticed the tick. Take a clear photograph or place the tick in a sealed container if identification may help, though routine tick testing does not replace medical evaluation.
Mark any redness with a pen and check the area daily. Monitor yourself for fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, rash, weakness, or other changes for several weeks.
Reducing Exposure Outdoors
Stay near the center of trails in tick-infested areas. Avoid brushing against tall grass, dense shrubs, leaf litter, and wooded edges.
Wear long sleeves, long pants, socks, and light-colored clothing. This makes ticks easier to spot.
Apply an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET to exposed skin according to its label. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin products designed for that purpose. Never apply permethrin directly to your skin.
After outdoor activity, shower and inspect your body and clothing. Check pets before they enter your home.
