Ticks are tiny arachnids that attach to your skin, feed on blood, and may transmit bacteria, viruses, or parasites while they feed. Most tick bites cause only temporary irritation, but some expose you to tick-related illnesses that need prompt medical attention.

If you find a tick attached, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Clean the area and watch for fever, rash, unusual fatigue, or body aches over the next several weeks.

Your risk depends on the tick species, how long it was attached, where the bite occurred, and the pathogens common in that region. The CDC’s guidance on ticks and tickborne disease notes that many illnesses share similar early symptoms, so medical advice matters when symptoms appear.

What Happens When a Tick Attaches

Ticks are parasites, not insects. They cut into skin and anchor themselves while releasing saliva as they feed.

That saliva can numb the area and help the tick remain attached. If the tick carries pathogens, bacteria or viruses can enter your body through the saliva.

How Ticks Feed and Transmit Pathogens

Hard ticks belong to the family Ixodidae and have a visible scutum, or shield-like plate. Soft ticks are in the family Argasidae and lack the same prominent shield.

Both types feed on blood and detect heat, moisture, odors, and movement as they search for a host. After finding a feeding site, a tick cuts the skin and inserts its mouthparts.

Some ticks produce a cement-like substance that helps them stay attached. Feeding may last from minutes to several days, depending on the species and life stage.

During feeding, tick saliva can carry pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites. An attached tick can also cause irritation even if it does not transmit an infection.

In rare cases, saliva contributes to tick paralysis.

Common Bite-Site Reactions

A tick bite may leave a small red spot, swelling, itching, tenderness, or mild warmth. These reactions often develop soon after removal and may fade within a few days.

A growing rash, increasing pain, drainage, fever, or other flu-like symptoms deserve medical attention. Some tickborne diseases produce no obvious rash, so do not assume a normal-looking bite rules out illness.

When Tick Saliva Causes Paralysis

A toxin in the saliva of an attached tick can cause tick paralysis, though this is rare. Weakness may begin near the legs and gradually move upward, sometimes affecting breathing or swallowing.

Remove the tick immediately and seek emergency care for progressive weakness, trouble breathing, facial weakness, or difficulty swallowing. Movement often returns within about 24 hours after removal, but urgent evaluation is still essential because similar symptoms can have other serious causes.

Symptoms and Diseases to Watch For

Tickborne diseases can begin with nonspecific symptoms, including fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, and swollen lymph nodes.

Geographic exposure and the type of tick can help your healthcare provider choose appropriate testing and treatment.

Early Symptoms That Need Medical Advice

Contact a healthcare provider if you develop fever, chills, headache, unusual fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, or a new rash within several weeks of a tick bite. Symptoms can appear even when you do not remember a bite.

Tell the clinician where and when you may have encountered ticks, whether you saved a photo of the tick, and when you removed it. The CDC explains that symptoms, geographic region, and laboratory tests all help guide evaluation.

Rashes Linked to Tickborne Illness

Lyme disease may cause erythema migrans, often described as a bull’s-eye rash, though its appearance can vary and it may not form a perfect ring. The rash typically expands over time rather than appearing as a small, stable mark.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and southern tick-associated rash illness can also cause rashes. A rash may be absent, so do not wait for one before seeking care when other concerning symptoms develop.

Major Infections Spread by U.S. Ticks

Important bacterial tick-borne diseases include Lyme disease, RMSF, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, Colorado tick fever, and tick-borne relapsing fever. Lyme disease is associated with Borrelia, RMSF with Rickettsia, and tularemia with Francisella tularensis.

Symptoms and treatment differ among these infections. Early medical evaluation is especially important for illnesses that can worsen quickly, such as RMSF and ehrlichiosis.

Less Common Viral, Parasitic, and Allergic Conditions

Some ticks transmit viruses such as Heartland virus, Powassan virus, and Colorado tick fever virus. Tick-borne relapsing fever can cause recurring episodes of fever.

Babesiosis is a parasitic infection that may be more severe in people without a spleen or with weakened immune systems. A bite from a lone star tick can also be associated with alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to a carbohydrate found in many red-meat products.

Delayed hives, swelling, stomach symptoms, or breathing difficulty after eating beef, pork, or lamb requires medical guidance. Seek emergency care for breathing problems or severe reactions.

Safe Removal and Bite Prevention

Prompt removal lowers the time available for feeding and potential pathogen transmission. You can also reduce exposure by using appropriate tick repellents, wearing treated clothing, checking your body after outdoor activity, and managing tick habitat around your home.

Removing an Attached Tick With Tweezers

  1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible.
  2. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure. Do not twist, jerk, crush, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly.
  3. If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot remove them easily, leave them alone and allow the skin to heal.
  4. Clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.
  5. Record the date and location, and take a clear photo or preserve the tick in alcohol if your healthcare provider recommends it.

When to Contact a Healthcare Provider

Call a healthcare provider if you develop fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, or a spreading rash after a bite. Seek urgent care for severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, paralysis, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Ask about preventive treatment when a deer tick or black-legged tick may have been attached for a prolonged period in an area where Lyme disease is common. Do not start antibiotics without professional advice.

Reducing Exposure Outdoors and at Home

Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent containing DEET to exposed skin as directed. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin, and follow product instructions carefully.

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks, and tuck pant legs into socks when walking through brush or tall grass. After outdoor activity, check your legs, waist, scalp, hairline, underarms, groin, and behind your knees.

Shower soon after returning indoors, launder clothing, and check pets to help remove unattached ticks. Keep grass short, clear leaf litter, and place a wood-chip or gravel barrier between lawns and wooded edges.

Common Human-Biting Tick Species

The lone star tick is common in much of the eastern, southeastern, and south-central United States.

The deer tick, also called the black-legged tick, transmits Lyme disease and other infections, especially in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and Pacific Coast.

The American dog tick spreads RMSF and tularemia.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick lives in Rocky Mountain regions and transmits Colorado tick fever. In rare cases, it causes tick paralysis.

The brown dog tick often lives around dogs and homes and transmits certain pathogens, including those associated with RMSF.
