Removing an Attached Tick Safely

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure, and avoid twisting, squeezing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly.

After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot remove them easily, leave them alone and let the skin heal.

Watch for irritation or infection.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s tick guidance recommends prompt removal and observation for signs of illness. You can save a photo of the tick for identification.

Watching for Early Illness Signs

Do not wait for a rash before calling. Some infections do not cause a noticeable rash, and early symptoms can resemble a mild viral illness.

Different ticks can transmit different diseases, and symptoms vary by region and pathogen. Lyme disease may cause an expanding rash, while Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and tularemia can cause fever and systemic illness.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever may cause sudden fever, severe headache, muscle aches, nausea, or a rash that can appear later. Ehrlichiosis can cause fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle pain, and confusion in severe cases.

Tularemia has several forms and may cause a painful skin ulcer, swollen lymph nodes, fever, or eye and throat symptoms, depending on how the bacteria entered your body. These illnesses can worsen quickly, so contact a healthcare provider promptly if you become sick after a tick bite.

Tick Paralysis and Progressive Weakness

A toxin released during tick feeding causes tick paralysis. Bacteria or viruses do not cause this condition.

Weakness often begins in the legs and moves upward. It can affect coordination, speech, swallowing, or breathing.

If you notice progressive weakness after finding a tick, treat it as an emergency. Remove the tick immediately if you can do so safely.

Seek emergency medical care, especially if breathing or swallowing becomes difficult.
