You’d probably assume a bark in the woods means there’s a dog nearby — but sometimes, it’s actually a deer. The little muntjac, known as the barking deer, lets out a sharp, dog-like bark whenever it gets spooked. Let’s talk about where muntjac hang out, why they make that weird sound, and how you can…
Deer usually steer clear of people, but sometimes, well, they get aggressive. Stay alert during mating season and whenever you see fawns around—those are the times deer might act bold or even defensive. Hormones, protecting their young, injuries, or people feeding them—any of these can turn a calm deer into a risky one. Let’s get…
Let’s get right to the point: how long do deer actually live? It depends a lot on where they’re living and what kind of care they get. A wild deer usually lives about four to six years. In captivity, though, deer can easily reach a decade or more. It’s kind of wild how much things…
You might be surprised, but adult wild deer in Britain pretty much have no natural predators these days. In England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, deer live without big carnivores like wolves, lynx, or bears, so people and wildlife managers step in to control their populations. This missing link in the food chain changes how deer…
It’s kind of wild, but the old English word for a deer actually started out as a catch-all for any animal. Back then, folks used the Old English term “dēor” to mean “animal” or “beast.” Over the years, it just stuck to the animal we now call a deer. Let’s look at how names like…
You might be surprised by just how many kinds of deer roam the world. There are about 50–55 species in the deer family (Cervidae), split into two main groups and living on nearly every continent—except for Australia and Antarctica. As you read on, you’ll see how scientists sort these species, what sets each group apart,…
You probably picture Rudolph with that famous glowing red nose and leading Santa’s sleigh, but have you ever wondered what kind of deer he actually is? Rudolph is a fictional reindeer (a caribou), not a white-tailed deer, and his story borrows from the traits of Arctic reindeer—think thick fur and antlers on both males and…
You’ll spot deer munching on leaves, shoots, grasses, berries, and fallen nuts all over woods, fields, and hedgerows in the UK. Deer mostly eat plant material — leaves, twigs, grasses, fruit, and tree bark — and what’s on the menu really depends on the season and the species. Walk into a woodland and you’ll notice…
You’ll spot the Old English word for deer tucked away in old texts and dictionaries if you look closely. Back then, the word was dēor, and it actually described any wild animal—not just the graceful deer we picture now. It’s interesting, right? Seeing how language and hunting changed what people meant by “deer” over time….
You probably see deer most often at dawn or dusk, but at night, they slip away to sheltered spots where they can rest and stay out of sight. Deer usually bed down in thick cover—think tangled thickets, patches of evergreens, or brushy edges—places that hide them well but still let them spot trouble and bolt…
