Lowering Your Chances of Being Bitten
You can reduce exposure by avoiding brush when practical, using an appropriate tick repellent, wearing treated clothing, and performing careful tick checks. Prompt removal limits the time an attached tick has to feed.

Use Repellents and Treated Clothing Correctly
Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or another approved active ingredient according to its label. Do not apply repellent to irritated skin, and follow age-specific directions for children.
Treat suitable clothing and gear with permethrin, or buy products already treated with it. Wear light-colored long sleeves and pants, tuck pants into socks when practical, and stay near the center of maintained trails.
Check Yourself, Children, and Pets
Perform tick checks as soon as possible after coming indoors. Inspect your scalp, hairline, ears, waist, armpits, groin, behind your knees, between your toes, and clothing seams.
Check children carefully, since they may not notice a tick. Inspect pets after outdoor time, especially around the ears, collar, neck, toes, and between the legs.

Remove a Tick Safely and Promptly
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water.
Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or coating the tick with petroleum jelly.
