You’ve probably heard somewhere that giraffes can lick their own eyes. And yeah, it’s true — a giraffe’s long, flexible tongue actually reaches its eyes in most cases. They use this trick to clean off dust or flick away pesky bugs. It sounds wild at first, but when you look at how giraffes are built,…
You might imagine a giraffe awkwardly paddling around, looking like a giant, spotted raft. The reality? It’s way more interesting—and honestly, a bit surprising. Giraffes actually float and might move through water, but their long legs, heavy bodies, and sky-high necks turn swimming into a slow, unstable, and rare event. That’s why you pretty much…
Ever wonder what animal counts as a giraffe’s closest cousin? You might picture a mini-giraffe with stripes—and honestly, you’d be spot on. The okapi, sometimes called the forest giraffe, is actually the giraffe’s closest living relative and the only other member of the Giraffidae family. The okapi blends giraffe-like features with zebra stripes and leads…
It might surprise you, but the closest dinosaur to a giraffe isn’t a direct ancestor. Instead, it’s a long-necked sauropod like Brachiosaurus, which had a similar body plan—long forelimbs and an upright neck. You might picture giraffes always covered in spots, right? Turns out, a few rare individuals have thrown everyone for a loop—scientists and the public alike. Yes, people have actually documented spotless giraffes, including a calf at a Tennessee zoo and a wild Angolan giraffe in Namibia. They’re extremely rare, but they’re real. Let’s dig into…
Ever noticed those bony bumps on a giraffe’s head and wondered if they could ever grow back after getting damaged? Giraffes have ossicones—those permanent, skin-covered bone knobs—that aren’t quite like antlers or true horns. If a giraffe’s ossicone gets badly damaged, it doesn’t really grow back like antlers do. Since ossicones fuse directly to the…
