Ticks did not suddenly appear in Canada. They arrived as migratory birds, deer, and other animal hosts carried them, and people and pets transported them during travel.
Once a tick reached a place with suitable habitat, hosts, and seasonal conditions, it could potentially survive and reproduce.

Warmer conditions and expanding suitable habitat now allow some tick populations to thrive in more parts of Canada. Blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, matter especially because they can spread Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases.
How Ticks Reach New Parts of Canada
Ticks rely on animal hosts for transportation, since they cannot travel far on their own. Birds can move them across long distances, while deer, rodents, pets, and people help carry ticks between nearby habitats.

The 1989 Long Point Milestone Near Lake Erie
In 1989, researchers found infected deer ticks near Long Point on Lake Erie in Ontario. The protected area had migratory birds, abundant deer, and suitable habitat, creating favorable conditions for ticks and Lyme disease transmission.
That finding showed that blacklegged ticks were not merely arriving occasionally. They could become established where hosts and environmental conditions supported their life cycle.
Expansion Across Southern Canada
Established risk now exists in parts of Southern Ontario, Southern Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba, and British Columbia. Reports and surveillance continue to track changes near populated areas such as Toronto and Montreal.
Tick presence varies within each province. Northern regions, including much of Yukon and Nunavut, have different climate and habitat conditions, and disease-carrying ticks have not broadly established themselves across Canada’s northern territories based on available surveillance.
Alberta and Saskatchewan also require careful monitoring because transported ticks and local establishment are not the same thing.
Which Canadian Ticks and Diseases Matter Most
Blacklegged ticks are the main concern for Lyme disease in much of Eastern and Central Canada. Western Blacklegged Ticks matter in British Columbia.
Other species, including American Dog Ticks and Lone Star Ticks, can affect health, yet risk depends on the species, location, pathogen, and length of attachment.

Blacklegged Ticks, Western Blacklegged Ticks, and Lyme Disease
The Eastern Blacklegged Tick, often called the Deer Tick, spreads Lyme disease in Eastern and Central Canada. The Western Blacklegged Tick can transmit Lyme disease in British Columbia.
These ticks may also carry pathogens associated with anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and Powassan virus. The Public Health Agency of Canada monitors Lyme disease cases and risk areas as tick ranges change.
Dog Ticks and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
The American Dog Tick is widespread in many Canadian regions and may feed on dogs, wildlife, and people. It can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and other less common infections.
Finding a Dog Tick does not mean it carries disease. Your risk depends on the tick species, local pathogen activity, whether it was attached, and how long it fed.
Emerging Species and Less Common Health Risks
The Lone Star Tick has attracted attention because a bite can be associated with Alpha-Gal Syndrome, a delayed allergy to mammalian meat. Reports of individual Lone Star Ticks do not prove that an established population exists throughout a region.
Powassan Virus can cause serious neurological illness, although human infections remain rare. Surveillance in places such as Alberta and Saskatchewan helps researchers separate transported ticks from species reproducing locally.
Ticks are arachnids related to spiders and mites, not insects. The Canadian Tick Research and Innovation Centre supports research and collaboration on tick identification, ecology, and health risks.
How to Identify a Tick and Respond to a Tick Bite
Take a photograph of the tick beside a ruler or submit it through eTick for identification.
Avoid crushing the tick during removal. Keep the specimen in a sealed container if you may need testing or identification.
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin. Pull upward steadily.
Clean the bite area and your hands. Record the date and location of the bite.
Contact a healthcare professional if you develop symptoms such as an expanding rash, fever, headache, or unusual fatigue.
If your dog or cat has a tick, ask your veterinarian about removal, monitoring, and prevention.
