When an Eight-Legged Lookalike Is Not a Tick
Spiders and mites also have eight legs, so eight legs alone do not prove you found a tick. Spiders usually have a distinct narrow waist between the front and rear body regions, while ticks have a compact, unified body.
Some mites are extremely small and may look like moving specks. Look for a tick-like scutum, short compact legs, and a flattened oval body.

Blacklegged Tick or Deer Tick

Lone Star Tick Markings

Your location matters because tick species vary by state and habitat. Use regional information alongside size and markings rather than identifying a tick from color alone.
