How Blacklegged Ticks Pick Up Borrelia

The Lyme disease bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, circulates among ticks and wildlife. Larval and nymphal ticks can acquire Borrelia while feeding on infected hosts such as white-footed mice and chipmunks.

The bacteria remain in the tick as it develops into its next life stage. A tick does not become infected simply by feeding on a deer.

Deer provide blood meals and help support tick populations, yet they do not infect ticks with Lyme disease bacteria. An infected tick can transmit the bacteria during a later meal on a person or animal.

Why Attachment Time Changes Transmission Risk

When an infected tick begins feeding, Borrelia typically needs time to move from the tick’s midgut toward its salivary glands and into the host. Transmission usually requires more than 24 hours of attachment, although timing can vary.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or coating the tick with petroleum jelly, because these actions can increase irritation and make removal harder.

Why Nymphs Cause Many Human Infections

Nymphal ticks play a major role in human infections because they are tiny, often about the size of a poppy seed, and active when people spend more time outdoors. You may not notice a nymphal tick attached to your skin.

Adult ticks can also transmit Lyme disease, and they are easier to spot because they are larger. Checking your body after outdoor activity, especially around your hairline, armpits, waist, groin, and behind your knees, helps you catch both nymphal and adult ticks sooner.

Which Ticks Carry Lyme Disease and Where Risk Is Highest

Only certain tick species transmit Lyme disease in the United States. Your risk is greatest where infected blacklegged ticks live, especially in wooded areas with leaf litter, brush, and wildlife hosts.

The Lyme Disease Vectors in North America

The black-legged tick, also called the deer tick, Ixodes scapularis, is the main eastern vector. It occurs across much of the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States.

The western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, transmits Lyme disease in areas along the Pacific Coast. Risk can vary sharply between nearby communities.

In Canada, areas referenced in local surveillance and travel discussions may include Barrie, Bright, King, Audet, Bristol, Brunswick, Bury, Essa, Hamilton, Hope, Hudson, Johnston, Kars, London, and Macdonald. Check current public-health information for your exact location rather than relying on a broad regional label.

Other Tick Species and the Illnesses They Can Spread

Not every tick bite is a Lyme disease exposure. The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, do not transmit Lyme disease bacteria, according to the CDC’s information about Lyme disease spread.

These species can still spread illnesses such as ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and other tickborne infections. Blacklegged ticks may also carry pathogens associated with babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Powassan virus disease.

Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI, is linked with lone star tick bites and is distinct from Lyme disease.

Habitats, Seasons, and Local Exposure

Blacklegged ticks favor wooded edges, leaf litter, tall grass, and brush. You can encounter them in forests, parks, trails, yards, and gardens, not only in remote wilderness.

In much of the eastern United States, nymphs are active from spring into summer, while adult ticks are often more noticeable in spring and fall. Mild weather can extend activity, so a body check remains useful whenever you spend time in tick habitat.

What to Do After Finding an Attached Tick

Fast, careful tick removal lowers the chance of infection and gives you useful details to share with a clinician. Save a photo of the tick, note where and when you found it, and monitor your health afterward.

Safe Tick Removal and What to Monitor

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grip the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upward slowly and steadily, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

If mouthparts remain embedded and you cannot remove them easily, let the skin heal rather than digging into it. Watch for expanding redness, a rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, facial weakness, or swollen lymph nodes.

When to Seek Medical Care or Ask About Doxycycline

Contact a healthcare professional if the tick may have been attached for at least 36 hours, appears to be an Ixodes tick, or was found in an area where Lyme disease is common. In certain circumstances, a clinician may prescribe a single preventive dose of doxycycline, typically when treatment can begin within 72 hours of removal.

Do not take leftover antibiotics or decide on doxycycline without medical guidance. A clinician will consider the tick species, estimated attachment time, local infection rates, allergies, pregnancy, age, and other health factors.

Recognizing Symptoms and Lyme Disease Diagnosis

An expanding erythema migrans rash may resemble a bull’s-eye, though it does not always have that appearance. Early symptoms can include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and joint pain, often appearing days or weeks after a bite.

Lyme disease diagnosis relies on your symptoms, physical findings, exposure history, and laboratory testing when appropriate. Early tests may be negative because your immune response has not developed fully, so tell your clinician about any recent tick exposure.

Reducing Future Tick Exposure

You can lower your risk by combining repellents, protective clothing, regular tick checks, and practical yard and pet routines. No single measure catches every tick, especially tiny nymphs.

Repellents, Clothing, and Body Checks

Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent according to its label. Common active ingredients include DEET, picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol.

Do not use oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol products on children younger than three years. Wear long pants, long sleeves, and light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to see.

Tuck pants into socks when walking through tall grass or brush, and consider clothing treated with permethrin. Afterward, check your skin, clothing, gear, and pets, then shower and launder or heat-dry clothing as directed.

Making Yards and Pet Routines Less Tick-Friendly

Keep grass low and remove leaf litter and brush. Create a wood-chip or gravel barrier between lawns and wooded edges.

Move play areas, seating, and stored firewood away from dense vegetation when possible.

Ask your veterinarian about a tick prevention plan for dogs and cats. Inspect pets after outdoor activity and use only products appropriate for their species, age, and weight.
