Prompt evaluation matters if you feel acutely ill after a tick bite. Do not wait for a rash or laboratory confirmation before seeking care, since treatment decisions may need to be made based on symptoms and exposure.
Other Tick-Borne Illnesses to Know
Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis can cause fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and muscle aches. Babesiosis may affect red blood cells and can be more severe for older adults or people with weakened immune systems.
Tularemia can cause fever and a painful ulcer near the bite, along with swollen lymph nodes. A lone star tick can transmit certain infections, and different tick species carry different pathogens.

What to Do After Finding an Attached Tick
Act calmly and promptly. Safe removal lowers the time the tick remains attached.

Remove the Tick Safely
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
Clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or coating the tick with petroleum jelly.
If mouthparts remain in your skin and you cannot remove them easily, let the skin heal and ask a clinician for advice. Save a photo of the tick, or place it in a sealed container if your clinician requests identification.
Monitor Symptoms and Contact a Clinician
Write down the date, location, and likely exposure area. Contact a clinician if you develop fever, chills, rash, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, facial weakness, or unusual nerve symptoms during the following weeks.
Preventive antibiotics are not appropriate for every tick bite. Depending on the tick, location, attachment time, and timing of removal, a clinician may consider antibiotics such as doxycycline.
