Most tree squirrels reach sexual maturity around 10 to 12 months. Some species and conditions can push that timing earlier or later. By their first year, a lot of young squirrels can breed and act like adults. The exact timing depends on species, food, and habitat. Let’s walk through a timeline of each growth stage,…
You’ll probably spot baby squirrels more often than you expect, since many common species breed twice a year. Most female squirrels have one or two litters each year, usually in late winter and then again in mid to late summer. Ever wonder why squirrel numbers explode in spring and summer? You’ll usually see baby squirrels opening their eyes at about four weeks old, but sometimes it happens as early as three weeks or as late as five, depending on the species and how healthy they are. By week four, most of them can finally see, and it’s not long before they start poking around outside…
Squirrels started out as small, tree-loving rodents millions of years ago. Over time, they turned into the diverse creatures you spot today. They picked up some clever traits—like sharp claws, bendy ankles, sharp eyesight, and a pretty wide diet—that help them climb, find food, and survive in both forests and cities. Let’s dig into their…
Most tree squirrels go from mating to birth in about 38 to 46 days. For many common species, it’s usually around 40–45 days. That’s a pretty short gestation, so squirrels can pull off two litters a year. Knowing the timing really helps if you want to spot when nests will get busy. If you’re curious…
