Mild winters may allow activity during parts of the cold season. Treat every outdoor outing as a potential exposure rather than relying on a strict start or end date for tick season.
Eastern Washington and Western Washington Differences
Western Washington and the eastern slopes of the Cascades support western blacklegged ticks. Eastern Washington commonly has Rocky Mountain wood ticks and western dog ticks.
Habitat varies widely within each region, so county-level patterns do not predict the risk at every trail or property. Ticks occur in King County and other populated areas, particularly near parks, greenbelts, wooded corridors, and unmanaged vegetation.

Practical Tick Bite Prevention

How to Remove a Tick Safely
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the attached tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer. Do not twist, crush, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly.
If mouthparts remain in the skin and do not come out easily, clean the area and leave them alone. Save the tick in a sealed container or bag with the collection date and location if identification may be useful.
Symptoms and Medical Follow-Up
Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, a rash, or flu-like illness after a tick bite. Symptoms may appear days or weeks later, and not every illness causes a classic bull’s-eye rash.
Tell your clinician about the bite date, likely location, travel, and how long the tick was attached. Saving the tick may help with identification, though routine testing of a tick does not determine whether you are infected.
Tick Identification, Submission, and State Surveillance

A submitted tick is not automatically tested for pathogens or proof that disease transmission occurred.

Submitting a Tick to Washington State Department of Health
The Washington State Department of Health accepts public tick submissions for identification through its designated process. Keep the tick intact in a sealed container, record when and where you found it, and note whether it was attached to you, another person, or a pet.
The submission form may request the county, ZIP code, general location, activity, host, attachment status, and recent out-of-state travel. The department identifies submitted ticks by species and life stage, then provides information about related health risks.
Public health laboratories and other agencies do not routinely test these submissions for bacteria.
