During mating, the male inserts sperm from the pedipalps into the female’s reproductive opening. That opening may be called the gonopore or, in many spiders, the epigynum.

The female and male align their bodies so sperm can enter efficiently. In some species, the male may repeat the transfer more than once to improve the chance of fertilization.

Where Females Store Sperm

After transfer, the female stores sperm in internal sacs called spermathecae. This lets her fertilize eggs later, even long after mating.

That storage system gives her control over when eggs are produced. She can mate with more than one male before laying an egg sac.
