Lyme disease starts outside the tick. A tick acquires Borrelia bacteria when it feeds on an infected small mammal.

Later, the tick may pass the bacteria to you during a blood meal. In the United States, infected blacklegged ticks spread Lyme disease most often.

Ticks carry Lyme disease because they move Borrelia from infected wildlife reservoirs to people through a bite. Your risk depends on the tick species, its life stage, local infection rates, how long it remains attached, and whether you recognize and remove it quickly.

Nymphal ticks create much of the human risk. Deer help sustain tick populations without infecting them.

The Wildlife Reservoirs That Infect Ticks

A young tick hatches without Lyme bacteria. Larval or nymphal ticks can acquire Borrelia burgdorferi from infected white-footed mice, chipmunks, and other small animals during a blood meal.

After feeding, the bacterium stays in the tick as it develops. An infected nymph or adult female can then transmit it during a later meal on a person, pet, or another host.

Female ticks do not pass Lyme bacteria directly to their offspring.

Why Nymphal Ticks Create The Greatest Human Risk

Nymphal ticks are active when people spend time outdoors, especially from spring into early summer in many eastern states. Their small size, about that of a poppy seed, makes them hard to notice on your skin.

Nymphs feed before becoming adults, which gives infected ticks a chance to transmit Borrelia. Adult ticks can spread Lyme disease too, but their larger size makes prompt discovery more likely.

Why Deer Support Ticks But Do Not Infect Them

Deer provide blood meals that let adult ticks survive, reproduce, and move through the landscape. They can carry ticks into new areas and help maintain the population of the Lyme disease vector.

Deer do not infect feeding ticks with Lyme disease. The main infectious link is an infected small mammal to an Ixodes tick, followed by that infected tick to you.

The Tick Species And Places Linked To Lyme Risk

Your risk changes with geography, habitat, and tick species. Blacklegged ticks transmit Lyme disease in certain parts of the United States.

Other ticks can spread conditions such as babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Blacklegged Ticks In The Eastern And Central United States

The eastern blacklegged tick, or deer tick, is Ixodes scapularis. It transmits Lyme disease across much of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States.

You are more likely to encounter blacklegged ticks in wooded areas, leaf litter, brush, and shaded vegetation. Local infection rates can differ sharply, even between nearby communities.

Western Blacklegged Ticks Along The Pacific Coast

The western blacklegged tick, or Ixodes pacificus, can transmit Lyme disease in smaller areas along the Pacific Coast. Cool, humid conditions support this species.

Trails bordered by brush, tall grass, fallen leaves, or dense woodland vegetation can expose you to questing ticks.

Ticks That Cause Other Health Concerns

Several common tick species do not transmit Lyme disease bacteria. These include the lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Those ticks can still spread other illnesses. Depending on the region, concerns include Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI), Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Powassan virus disease, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis.

A rash or fever after any tick bite deserves medical attention.

What Determines Infection After A Tick Bite

An infected tick does not guarantee infection after every bite. Transmission depends on attachment time, the tick’s infection status, prompt removal, and whether you recognize early signs and obtain care.

Attachment Time And Prompt Tick Removal

In general, an infected tick must stay attached for more than 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease bacteria. Prompt tick removal can greatly reduce your risk.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Clean the bite area and your hands afterward.

Avoid twisting, burning, or coating the tick with petroleum jelly.

Early Signs That Need Medical Attention

Watch for an expanding erythema migrans rash, which may appear days after a bite and does not always look like a bull’s-eye. Fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, and joint pain can also occur.

You may never notice a tick bite, especially after exposure to nymphal ticks. Contact a health professional if symptoms develop after outdoor activity, and mention when and where you may have encountered ticks.

Diagnosis And Treatment Before Complications Develop

Clinicians diagnose Lyme disease using your symptoms, exposure history, physical examination, and testing when appropriate. Early antibiotic treatment can prevent progression to more serious Lyme disease.

Without appropriate care, infection may contribute to neurological problems, Lyme arthritis, or Lyme carditis, which can include heart block. Ordinary touching, kissing, sexual contact, or blood transfusion do not spread Lyme disease in daily life.

Reducing Exposure Before And After Outdoor Time

You can lower your risk by limiting contact with tick habitat and finding attached ticks quickly. Prevention works best as a routine that includes repellent, clothing choices, outdoor awareness, and a careful check after you return home.

Personal Protection In Tick Habitat

Apply an appropriate tick repellent to exposed skin or clothing according to the label. Wear light-colored clothing, long pants, and socks, and consider tucking pants into socks when walking through wooded areas, leaf litter, or tall grass.

Stay near the center of maintained trails instead of brushing against dense vegetation. Treating clothing and gear with permethrin can provide extra protection when used as directed.

Daily Tick Checks And Safer Removal

After outdoor time, check your legs, waist, scalp, hairline, behind your knees, underarms, and around your ears. Examine children and pets, place worn clothing in a hot dryer when appropriate, and shower soon after returning indoors.

If you find a tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Record the date and location of the exposure, and take a clear photograph if identifying the tick could help your clinician assess risk.

When To Contact A Health Professional

Contact a health professional if a tick attached for an extended period, you cannot remove it completely, or you develop a rash, fever, headache, fatigue, facial weakness, palpitations, or joint swelling.

The CDC’s prevention guidance recommends prompt attention after possible exposure.

Do not wait for symptoms to become severe.

A clinician can evaluate the tick, your exposure, regional risk, and whether you need testing or antibiotic treatment.
