Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Do not twist, crush, burn, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly.

If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot remove them easily, clean the area and seek medical advice if irritation develops.

Normal Bite Reactions and Warning Signs

A small area of redness or swelling immediately after removal can reflect local irritation. Monitor the site instead of relying on a single visual pattern, since a tick bite rash can vary and some illnesses do not cause a rash.

Illnesses and Symptoms That Need Medical Advice

Infected ticks can transmit Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, and Southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). Some ticks can also cause tick paralysis, a rare condition linked to toxin-containing saliva from an attached tick.

Tell your healthcare professional when and where the bite occurred, along with any travel or outdoor exposure. Symptoms overlap among tick-borne diseases, so diagnosis may depend on your symptoms, location, and appropriate testing.

Reducing Future Exposure Outdoors And At Home

Use an EPA-registered insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, or another approved active ingredient. Follow the label instructions carefully.

Treat suitable clothing and gear with permethrin. Wear light-colored long sleeves and pants, and tuck pants into socks when practical.

Check for ticks after outdoor activities. Pay attention to the scalp, hairline, ears, waist, groin, behind the knees, and between the toes.

Shower soon after coming indoors. Check pets and keep yards free of excess brush and leaf litter to reduce exposure.
