Ticks do not deliberately choose you as a meal. If you seem to get more tick bites than someone beside you, the difference usually comes down to where you walk, how your clothing contacts vegetation, how long you stay outdoors, and how quickly you find and remove attached ticks.

Ticks generally bite the person who gives them the best opportunity to make contact, not because of a special “tick magnet” trait.

Ticks wait in vegetation rather than flying or jumping toward you. They detect carbon dioxide, body heat, movement, moisture, and certain odors, which may influence which passing host they encounter.

Habitat contact usually matters more than blood type or a single body characteristic.

Lowering Your Chance of Tick Bites

You cannot make yourself invisible to ticks, but you can limit vegetation contact and reduce the time a tick remains on you.

If you find an attached tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it close to your skin and pull upward steadily.

Do not burn the tick or coat it with petroleum jelly.

When Symptoms Need Medical Attention

A tick bite does not automatically mean you have an infection.

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, headache, unusual fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, or a spreading rash after a bite.

Lyme disease can cause an expanding rash. Not everyone develops the classic bull’s-eye pattern.

See a doctor if you cannot determine how long the tick was attached. Seek help if you cannot remove it completely or develop concerning symptoms.
