Ticks do not naturally have Lyme disease. They pick up the bacteria when they feed on an infected animal.

Ticks may then pass those bacteria to you during a later blood meal. In the United States, the main culprit is the blacklegged tick, which transmits Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium most often responsible for Lyme disease.

You can lower your risk by avoiding tick habitat, checking your skin and clothing after outdoor activity, and removing an attached tick promptly. The transmission cycle involves wildlife, bacteria, tick life stages, and the places where people spend time.

Lyme disease pathogens circulate through repeated feeding between ticks and animal hosts. Small mammals often infect young ticks.

How Ticks Pick Up Pathogens From Animal Hosts

Ticks need blood meals to develop from one life stage to the next. An uninfected larva or nymph can pick up Borrelia burgdorferi when feeding on an infected host.

The bacteria can remain in the tick as it molts. An infected tick may later bite another animal or a person.

The bacteria move from the tick’s gut toward its salivary glands during feeding, creating an opportunity for transmission. Not every tick becomes infected, and an infected tick does not transmit Lyme disease with every bite.

Why White-Footed Mice and Chipmunks Matter More Than Deer

White-footed mice and chipmunks serve as important reservoirs because they carry Lyme bacteria in their blood and infect feeding ticks. Their nests and activity areas overlap with the leaf litter where young ticks wait for hosts.

Deer support the tick life cycle because adult ticks commonly feed on them and use them to spread through wooded areas. Deer generally do not infect ticks with Borrelia burgdorferi, so their main role is to support and transport tick populations rather than serve as the primary bacterial reservoir.

How Tick Life Stages Shape Infection Risk

Larvae usually hatch uninfected because adult female ticks do not typically pass Lyme bacteria to their eggs. After a larva feeds on an infected small mammal, it can molt into an infected nymph.

Nymphal ticks are especially important because they are tiny, active during warmer months, and easy to miss. Adult ticks can also transmit Lyme disease, though their larger size makes detection more likely.

The CDC’s Lyme disease prevention guidance identifies infected blacklegged ticks as the route by which the bacteria reach people.

The Tick Species Linked to Lyme Disease

A blacklegged tick in the Ixodes genus is the primary Lyme disease vector in the United States. Geography matters, since eastern, Midwestern, and Pacific Coast species occupy different regions and do not pose identical risks.

Eastern and Midwestern Blacklegged Ticks

The eastern blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is also widely called the deer tick. It is the main Lyme disease vector across much of the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, and upper Midwest.

These blacklegged ticks can also carry organisms linked to babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and other tickborne diseases. A tick’s species, location, life stage, and infection status all affect the significance of a bite.

Western Blacklegged Ticks Along the Pacific Coast

The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, is also called the western black-legged tick. It occurs along the Pacific Coast and can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi to people.

Lyme risk varies considerably within the West. Forest type, host populations, seasonal activity, and local infection rates influence whether a particular outdoor area is likely to contain infected ticks.

Why Other Common Ticks Are Different

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, can bite people and transmit other pathogens. They do not serve as primary vectors of Lyme disease in the United States.

A lone star tick bite can cause a rash or illness that resembles Lyme disease, including southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI. Because tick bites can look alike, you should not identify a tick species from skin irritation alone.

What Makes a Tick Bite More or Less Risky

Risk depends on more than noticing a tick. The species, local infection patterns, life stage, attachment duration, and location of exposure all influence the chance of transmission.

Attachment Time and Prompt Tick Removal

An infected blacklegged tick generally needs time to transmit Lyme bacteria while it feeds. Removing a tick promptly reduces the opportunity for transmission, although no exact attachment period guarantees zero risk.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin and pull upward with steady pressure. Clean the bite area and your hands afterward.

Avoid burning the tick or covering it with petroleum jelly, which can increase irritation and delay removal.

Where and When Tick Exposure Happens

You can encounter ticks in wooded areas, brush, leaf litter, tall grass, and places where wildlife travels. Nymphs are active during much of the warmer season.

Adult ticks may remain active during mild weather, including parts of fall and winter. Wear shoes and clothing that cover your skin, apply an appropriate tick repellent, and check your body, children, gear, and pets after outdoor activity.

Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, armpits, groin, waist, and behind the knees.

Symptoms That Need Medical Attention

Possible early Lyme disease symptoms include an expanding rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and muscle or joint aches. The rash may not form a classic bull’s-eye pattern, and some people do not notice one.

Contact a healthcare professional after a tick bite if you develop symptoms or had substantial exposure in an area where Lyme disease occurs. A Lyme disease diagnosis relies on your symptoms, exposure history, and, when appropriate, laboratory testing.

Other Illnesses Ticks Can Spread

Ticks can carry bacteria, viruses, and parasites, so a bite does not point to Lyme disease alone. Your likely risk depends on the tick species and the region where exposure occurred.

Infections Carried by Blacklegged Ticks

Blacklegged ticks can transmit Lyme disease as well as babesiosis and anaplasmosis. They may also carry pathogens associated with Powassan virus disease, a rare illness caused by a virus.

Coinfections can produce overlapping symptoms, such as fever, chills, headache, and fatigue. Persistent high fever or symptoms that do not follow the expected course of Lyme disease deserve medical evaluation.

Diseases Associated With Other Tick Species

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is associated with certain Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus ticks. Ehrlichiosis is commonly linked to lone star ticks and related species.

Tularemia can also spread through tick bites, and some tickborne viruses cause serious neurologic disease. Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI, may follow a lone star tick bite and can resemble early Lyme disease.

These illnesses require different testing and treatment decisions, so the suspected tick species and exposure location matter.

Why Pets and Blood Donation Need Context

Dogs can bring ticks into your home. They do not transmit Lyme disease directly to you.

Use veterinarian-recommended prevention for pets. Inspect them after outdoor activity and remove ticks safely.

Some tickborne infections, including babesiosis, can spread through blood transfusion. Blood donation screening and donor health questions reduce this risk.

Prompt medical care after a tick exposure helps identify infections before complications develop.
