Dogs collect ticks while walking through brush, tall grass, or leaf litter. Cats that roam outdoors can also carry ticks inside.

A loose parasite may crawl onto furniture, bedding, or you.

Which Tick Species Carry Which Diseases

Blacklegged Ticks And Lyme Risk

The eastern blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is often called the deer tick or black-legged tick. It can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, along with babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and human granulocytic anaplasmosis.

The western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, can also transmit Lyme disease in parts of the Pacific Coast.

A tick bite does not guarantee infection. Transmission depends on factors such as the tick’s infection status and feeding time.

Dog, Lone Star, And Gulf Coast Ticks

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, can transmit tularemia and Rocky Mountain spotted fever, or RMSF. The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is associated with RMSF in some settings and can live around kennels and homes.

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, may transmit ehrlichiosis, including infections involving Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii. It is also associated with STARI, or southern tick-associated rash illness, and alpha-gal syndrome.

The Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum, can transmit rickettsiosis and spotted fever group infections. Geographic ranges overlap, so you should not identify disease risk from appearance alone.

Western And Emerging Tick Species

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, can transmit Colorado tick fever and tularemia. The Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis, is associated with Pacific Coast tick fever and other spotted fever group rickettsioses.

The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis, is established in parts of the United States. It can affect livestock and wildlife.

Researchers continue to monitor its ability to transmit human pathogens.

Why Location And Life Stage Change The Risk

Regional Patterns Across The United States

Blacklegged ticks are especially important in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, upper Midwest, and parts of the Pacific Coast. Lyme disease risk is prominent in areas including New York State and parts of New England, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Other regions have greater activity from lone star ticks, American dog ticks, Gulf Coast ticks, or Rocky Mountain wood ticks. Travel matters too, because you can encounter a different tick species after visiting a new region.

Why Tiny Nymphs Are Easy To Miss

Nymphal ticks are often about the size of a poppy seed, making them harder to notice than adult ticks. They can attach in hidden locations such as the scalp, groin, armpit, waistline, or behind the knees.

Nymphs are active during warmer months. You may spend more time outdoors during these months.

A daily tick check is valuable because early removal limits the opportunity for a tick to transmit pathogens.

Tick Presence Does Not Equal Disease Transmission

Finding a tick does not prove that it carries bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Transmission depends on the species, pathogen, feeding process, and exposure circumstances.

After Exposure: Prevention, Removal, And Symptoms

You can lower risk by preventing attachment, removing a tick promptly, and watching for changes in your health. Keep the tick if possible in a sealed container or clear photograph.

Daily Tick Checks And Repellent Habits

Perform a full tick check after time outdoors, including your hairline, ears, neck, waist, groin, armpits, knees, and ankles. Check children, pets, clothing, backpacks, and outdoor gear as well.

Use an EPA-registered insect repellent as directed. Wear long pants and socks.

Consider treating clothing and gear with permethrin products labeled for that use. Showering soon after coming indoors can help you find unattached ticks.

Safe Tick Removal With Tweezers

Use clean, fine-pointed or pointed tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure.

Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or rubbing alcohol. Do not twist, crush, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly.

When To Contact A Healthcare Professional

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop a rash, fever, chills, headache, fatigue, joint pain, or flu-like symptoms within the weeks after a tick bite.

Tell your provider when and where the exposure happened. Let them know if the tick was attached and whether you saved an image or specimen.

Ask promptly about symptoms that could signal Lyme disease, ehrlichia infection, RMSF, or another tick-borne disease.

Doctors may prescribe antibiotics to treat some bacterial infections. Viruses require different care.

Seek urgent medical attention for breathing difficulty, severe weakness, confusion, or progressive paralysis.

An attached tick’s saliva contains toxins that can cause tick paralysis. This condition may improve after removal, but it still needs immediate evaluation.
