Climate change can also change tick habitats and seasonal activity. Practical tick exposure precautions are useful throughout the year.

The Ticks That Pose The Greatest Human Health Risk

South Africa has exceptional tick diversity. An updated checklist records about 11% of the world’s tick species in the country’s small land area.

Only some tick vectors pose a substantial human health risk. The most relevant threats include spotted fever group rickettsiae and, in specific circumstances, viral disease.

Bont Ticks And African Tick-Bite Fever

The bont tick, especially Amblyomma hebraeum, often causes African tick-bite fever (ATBF). Amblyomma variegatum can also transmit Rickettsia africae, the bacterium behind this illness.

These ticks commonly live in rural, bushveld, cattle, and wildlife environments. ATBF symptoms often begin about 5 to 10 days after a bite.
