Ticks are tiny parasitic arachnids, not insects. They belong to the order Ixodida and feed on the blood of mammals, birds, amphibians, and sometimes reptiles.

You may encounter them in wooded, brushy, or grassy areas across the United States. Leaf litter and wildlife create suitable tick habitat in these environments.

How Ticks Look, Feed, and Develop

Ticks have specialized bodies and feeding parts that let them attach securely and consume a large blood meal. Their four-stage life cycle and host-seeking behavior explain why even very small ticks can pose a health risk.

Tick Anatomy and Hard vs. Soft Ticks

Ticks belong to the superorder Parasitiformes, alongside mites, and scientists describe them as hematophages because they feed on blood. The order Ixodida includes the family Ixodidae, or hard ticks, and Argasidae, or soft ticks.

The smaller family Nuttalliellidae includes Nuttalliella namaqua. The extinct family Khimairidae is known from fossils.

A hard tick has a firm dorsal shield called a scutum. A soft tick lacks that shield and usually has mouthparts hidden on the underside.

Genera such as Argas and Ornithodoros include soft ticks. A tick’s body, or idiosoma, carries its legs and internal organs.

Its feeding structure, called the gnathosoma or capitulum, includes the piercing chelicerae, sensory palps, and barbed hypostome. The hypostome anchors the tick in your skin while saliva helps keep blood flowing and reduces your awareness of the bite.

Ticks have existed for tens of millions of years. Tick fossils from the Cretaceous period, including specimens preserved in Burmese amber, include ancient relatives of Bothriocroton and Haemaphysalis.

The Tick Life Cycle

Ticks develop through four stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Larvae hatch with six legs.

After feeding and molting, nymphs and adult ticks have eight legs. Each stage generally needs a blood meal before molting or reproducing.

Hard ticks may use one, two, or three hosts during development. Soft ticks can pass through several nymphal stages and feed repeatedly.

Nymphs are especially difficult for you to spot because they can be smaller than a poppy seed. Adults are easier to see, particularly after feeding causes the body to swell.

Where Ticks Live and How They Find Hosts

You are most likely to encounter ticks in brush, tall grass, woodland edges, and leaf litter. These boundary areas, called an ecotone, often provide shade, humidity, and access to mammals and birds.

Ticks do not jump or fly. During questing, they climb vegetation and hold out their legs, attaching when you brush past.

  • Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis, which commonly cause fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue.
  • Babesiosis, a parasitic infection that can affect red blood cells.
  • Tularemia, caused by Francisella tularensis.
  • Colorado tick fever and tick-borne relapsing fever.
  • Q fever, associated with Coxiella bacteria.
  • Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI.
  • Viral diseases caused by Heartland virus, Powassan virus, and Bourbon virus.
  • Tick paralysis, a toxin-related condition that can cause progressive weakness.

Symptoms may include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, swollen glands, rash, nausea, or shortness of breath. A bull’s-eye rash can occur with Lyme disease, though many people do not develop one.

When To Seek Medical Care

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, rash, worsening fatigue, severe headache, joint pain, muscle aches, or other new symptoms after a tick bite or time outdoors. Tell the clinician when and where you may have encountered the tick, and keep a photo or the tick itself if you can do so safely.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, facial swelling, severe weakness, confusion, paralysis, or signs of a serious allergic reaction. Do not start antibiotics on your own.

Recognizing Common Human-Biting Ticks

Tick identification can be difficult because color, size, sex, and feeding status vary. A close photograph, location, and the tick’s markings can help a healthcare professional or local health department identify it.

Blacklegged and Western Blacklegged Ticks

The deer tick, also called the black-legged tick or blacklegged tick, belongs to the genus Ixodes. In the eastern and north-central United States, the primary species is Ixodes scapularis.

The western blacklegged tick is a related species found mainly along the Pacific Coast. Adult blacklegged ticks are small and dark, with reddish-brown bodies and dark legs.

Nymphs are much smaller and often cause unnoticed bites. These ticks are important vectors of Lyme disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and other infections.

Dog Ticks and Brown Dog Ticks

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, is commonly found in much of the United States. It has ornate pale markings on a brown-gray body and may be relatively large as an adult.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, occurs mainly in the Rocky Mountain and northwestern regions. The Pacific Coast tick includes regional Dermacentor species.

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is reddish brown and often lives around kennels, homes, and dogs. Unlike many species, it can complete much of its life cycle indoors.

Lone Star and Regional Species

The lone star tick, in the genus Amblyomma, is widespread across the eastern, southeastern, and south-central United States. An adult female often has a single pale spot on her back, while males may have scattered pale markings.

Lone star ticks can bite people aggressively and are associated with ehrlichiosis, tularemia, STARI, and other health concerns. Regional species differ in appearance and disease risk, so location matters when you assess a tick bite.

Tick Removal and Bite Prevention

You can reduce your risk by avoiding dense vegetation when practical, using repellent correctly, checking your body and clothing, and removing attached ticks promptly. Prevention works best as a routine after every outdoor outing.

How To Remove an Attached Tick Safely

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure.

Avoid twisting, jerking, squeezing the body, or covering the tick with substances. If mouthparts remain in your skin and you cannot remove them easily, leave them alone and let the skin heal rather than digging into the wound.

Clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Take a clear photo or place the tick in a sealed container if identification may be useful.

What To Do After Tick Removal

Record the date, location, and likely exposure area. Watch the bite site and your health for several weeks, since fever, rash, chills, headache, muscle aches, or joint pain may not appear immediately.

A small area of redness and irritation can occur after a bite. Expanding redness, a spreading rash, drainage, increasing pain, or flu-like symptoms warrant medical advice.

Share the tick’s appearance and attachment duration with your healthcare professional. Do not rely on symptoms alone to rule out infection.

Reducing Tick Exposure Outdoors and at Home

Use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin products made for that purpose, and never apply permethrin directly to your skin.

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and light-colored clothing so you can spot ticks more easily. Stay near the center of maintained trails.

Avoid brushing against tall grass and dense shrubs. After outdoor activities, inspect your clothing, shoes, hair, skin, and pets.

Tumble-dry clothes on high heat when appropriate. Shower soon after coming indoors.

Keep lawns trimmed and clear excess leaf litter near areas you use often.
