An adult female lone star tick usually has a single pale spot near the center of its back.

Deer ticks, also called blacklegged ticks, are Ixodes scapularis and are the main Lyme disease vector in the eastern United States.

American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, have different markings and can transmit spotted fever group Rickettsia and other pathogens.
