Warm, humid weather brings more people outdoors and encourages ticks to quest from grass, shrubs, and leaf litter. In parts of the South, mild winters support activity nearly year-round, while northern areas still see blacklegged ticks on occasional mild winter days.

Not every tick carries a pathogen. Each species has a different disease profile.

Perform a full body check as soon as you return. Examine your scalp, hairline, ears, neck, waist, armpits, groin, behind your knees, and between your toes.

Check children, pets, backpacks, and outdoor gear too.

Showering soon after coming indoors can help remove unattached ticks and gives you a convenient time for inspection. Tumble-dry clothing on high heat when appropriate, following garment-care instructions, because washing alone may not kill every tick.

Making Yards Less Tick-Friendly

Keep grass short, clear leaf litter, and trim brush along paths and play areas. Create a dry border of wood chips or gravel between lawns and wooded edges, and stack firewood neatly in a sunny, dry location.

Keep playground equipment and seating away from dense vegetation. A professional tick treatment may help in some properties, especially when habitat is extensive, though it should complement personal prevention.

What to Do After an Attached Tick Is Found

An attached tick can look alarming. Prompt, careful action lowers the time it has to feed.

Save details about where and when you found it, especially if you later develop symptoms.

Seek urgent care for severe weakness, breathing problems, confusion, or rapidly worsening illness.

Your clinician may consider the tick species, attachment history, travel or residence, symptoms, and local disease patterns. Do not wait for symptoms to become severe before requesting medical guidance.

Understanding Lyme Disease and Other Tickborne Illnesses

Bacteria in the Borrelia burgdorferi group cause Lyme disease. Some blacklegged ticks carry these bacteria.

You may experience an expanding erythema migrans rash, feverish illness, fatigue, headache, or aches. Not everyone develops the classic rash.

Other conditions include anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, Southern tick-associated rash illness, and alpha-gal syndrome. Symptoms can overlap, so a clinician familiar with your region should make testing and treatment decisions.
