Southern states may see activity nearly year-round. Northern areas can still have winter activity during warm spells.

What Brings Ticks Out

Ticks respond to temperature, humidity, shade, and host movement. Damp leaf litter, dense ground cover, and moderate weather help prevent dehydration while ticks wait on vegetation for a passing person, pet, or animal.

A warm, humid day after rain can increase encounters, especially along woodland edges and trails. Dry heat, intense sun, and prolonged freezing conditions can suppress activity.

Why Mild Winter Days Still Matter

Adult ticks may become active during a thaw, particularly when temperatures rise above freezing and the ground is not deeply frozen. Snow cover, wind, and low humidity still limit exposure, so winter risk varies sharply by region.

In northern states, adult ticks can quest during mild winter days. You should continue checking clothing and pets whenever you walk through leaf litter, even in winter.

The Main Seasonal Activity Pattern

Spring brings emergence, with high activity in late spring and summer, and another important period in fall. Nymphs often drive summer tick bites because they are tiny and active when you spend more time outdoors.

Adult ticks can be especially noticeable in spring and fall. Weather can shift these peaks by weeks.

A cool spring may delay activity. A mild winter and early spring can bring ticks out sooner.

Regional Tick Seasons and Species to Watch

Your risk depends on geography, habitat, and species. Common U.S. ticks include blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, along with lone star ticks, American dog ticks, Rocky Mountain wood ticks, Gulf Coast ticks, and brown dog ticks.

Northeast and Upper Midwest

Blacklegged ticks are widespread across the Northeast and Upper Midwest. The deer-associated name refers to an important host, though these ticks also feed on rodents, birds, pets, and people.

Adults may be active during mild days in fall, winter, and early spring. Nymphs become especially important from late spring into summer, when their small size makes them easy to miss and exposure to Lyme disease risk increases.

The genus Ixodes includes the deer tick group. Dense woods, shaded leaf litter, and humid ground cover provide favorable habitat.

Southern States

Southern states commonly have longer tick seasons, with some species active through much of the year. Lone star ticks, in the genus Amblyomma, are widespread in the Southeast and can be aggressive questers in brushy areas.

Western risk changes with elevation, rainfall, vegetation, and habitat. The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, occurs in parts of the West.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick is associated with mountainous and high-elevation areas. The Gulf Coast tick may occur in suitable warmer habitats, and brown dog ticks, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, can persist around homes and animals.

Regional species may include Haemaphysalis and Amblyomma ticks as well. Spring and early summer often bring increased activity in many western areas.

Eggs and Larvae

Larvae often feed on small animals such as rodents and birds. Their timing depends on species and weather, so you may encounter them in humid ground cover even when larger ticks are not obvious.

Nymphs and Early-Summer Exposure

The nymph stage is a major concern for human exposure in many parts of the United States. Nymphs are poppy-seed sized, difficult to spot, and commonly active from late spring through summer.

A nymph can transmit Lyme disease and other tickborne illness if infected and attached long enough to feed. Tick saliva can contain compounds that reduce irritation, making an attached tick easy to overlook.

Fall and Spring Adult Activity

Adults are larger and easier to detect, though they can still hide in clothing or hair. In the Northeast and Upper Midwest, adult blacklegged ticks may quest during fall and mild winter or early-spring days.

Fall activity matters because people often spend time outdoors clearing leaves, walking dogs, or hunting. Spring activity can rise quickly after temperatures and humidity become favorable.

Reducing Tick Exposure and Responding to Bites

You can reduce risk by limiting contact with dense vegetation, using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and checking your body and pets after outdoor activity. Ticks may transmit tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, other forms of spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, Bourbon virus, Heartland virus, and alpha-gal syndrome, so prompt removal matters.

Higher-Risk Places and Outdoor Habits

Ticks often wait in wooded areas, tall grass, brush, and shaded edges rather than dropping from trees. Stay near the center of cleared hiking trails, avoid brushing against vegetation, and use an EPA-registered repellent as directed.

Wear light-colored clothing, long pants, and socks. Tucking pants into socks can make crawling ticks easier to see.

Permethrin-treated clothing can add protection when used according to its label.

Tick Checks After Time Outside

Perform thorough tick checks after time outdoors, including around your scalp, ears, neck, waist, armpits, groin, and behind your knees. Check children, pets, shoes, backpacks, and clothing as well.

Safe Tick Removal and When to Seek Care

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to remove a tick. Grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible and pull upward with steady pressure.

Clean the bite area and your hands after removing the tick. Do not twist, crush, burn, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly.

Record the date and location of the bite. Watch for expanding redness, fever, headache, fatigue, or muscle aches.
