  1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible.
  2. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure. Avoid twisting, crushing, or jerking the tick.
  3. If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot remove them easily, leave them alone and allow the skin to heal.
  4. Dispose of the tick in alcohol, a sealed container, or wrapped tape. Do not burn it or apply petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat.
  5. Wash your hands and the bite area with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

Write down when and where you may have encountered the tick. Take a photo of the tick or bite area if useful.

Effective tick prevention combines clothing, repellent, routine tick checks, and practical yard maintenance. You can reduce contact with ticks without avoiding outdoor activities.

Personal Protection Outdoors

Stay near the center of maintained trails and avoid brushing against tall grass, dense brush, and leaf litter. Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot, tuck pants into socks, and use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label.
