Ticks become most active when temperatures are mild and humidity is high, especially from late spring through early summer. In much of the United States, nymphs create the greatest risk for unnoticed bites during this period. Adult ticks often reach a second activity peak in fall.

The Short Answer: Peak Months, Daily Timing, and Weather

Peak tick season often runs from late spring into midsummer. Another important period occurs in fall.

Humidity, shaded leaf litter, and mild temperatures support questing. Ticks climb vegetation and wait for passing hosts, which can increase your chance of tick bites.

Why Late Spring and Early Summer Bring the Highest Risk

In the Northeast and Upper Midwest, May through July brings heavy activity from black-legged tick nymphs. These tiny ticks can be difficult to see, and their activity overlaps with time spent hiking, gardening, camping, and playing outdoors.

Nymphs can transmit Lyme disease before you notice them. Early summer marks a major peak, with adult activity returning in fall.

Why Dawn, Dusk, and Humid Conditions Can Increase Exposure

Ticks respond to cooler, more humid periods around dawn and dusk. These conditions encourage questing, especially in shaded grass, brush, and leaf litter.

Ticks can remain active at night. Damp weather or the hours after rain may increase activity.

Wet vegetation can brush against your legs, shoes, or clothing and give ticks an easy route to your skin.

How Temperature Changes Tick Activity

Adult deer ticks begin questing when ground temperatures rise above roughly 40°F. Activity often increases through the 60s and 70s°F when moisture is available.

Very hot, dry conditions can drive some ticks deeper into shaded leaf litter to avoid losing water. Hot days are not risk-free, especially in humid areas or where vegetation stays damp.

Seasonal Activity by Region and Tick Species

Local tick season depends on climate, habitat, and the species present. Deer ticks, also called black-legged ticks, often follow a different pattern from lone star ticks, American dog ticks, Gulf Coast ticks, western black-legged ticks, and Rocky Mountain wood ticks.

Ticks appear in grasses and leaf litter across varied woodland and meadow habitats during spring, summer, and autumn.

Northeast and Upper Midwest: Deer Tick Peaks

In the Northeast and Upper Midwest, the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick, shows two notable activity periods. Nymphs are most active from late spring through early summer. Adults become especially active in fall.

These ticks live in wooded and brushy habitats where deer help maintain their life cycle. You can also encounter deer ticks along trail edges, in tall grass, and in damp leaf litter.

Southern States: Lone Star and Gulf Coast Tick Activity

The lone star tick is widespread across much of the South and can remain active through a longer warm-weather period. Activity may begin earlier in spring and continue later into fall than the typical Northeast pattern.

Lone star ticks may quest during warmer daytime conditions, including periods when deer ticks retreat from dry heat. Gulf Coast ticks also favor warm regions and can occur in coastal and inland habitats with suitable grass, brush, and wildlife hosts.

Western States: Western Black-Legged and Rocky Mountain Wood Ticks

The western black-legged tick occurs primarily in parts of the Pacific Coast and can be active during cooler, wetter seasons. In many areas, activity rises in winter and spring after rainfall supports moist vegetation.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick lives in higher-elevation and western habitats. Its activity often increases in spring and early summer as snow recedes and temperatures become suitable.

Local elevation, rainfall, and host availability can shift the timing considerably.

Why Ticks Can Still Be Active in Fall and Winter

A drop in temperature does not automatically end tick season. Adult deer ticks can remain active in fall and may resume questing during mild winter days when ground conditions become suitable.

Adult Deer Ticks on Mild Winter Days

Adult deer ticks often become prominent in October and November. Cooler weather encourages people to spend time outdoors without expecting ticks.

They may emerge from leaf litter whenever temperatures rise above roughly 40°F. A snow-free winter afternoon can still create exposure.

How Life Stages Shape the Seasonal Risk

Tick activity changes as ticks develop from larvae to nymphs and adults. Nymphs often drive the early-summer risk, while adult deer ticks contribute to a fall peak and may remain active during winter warm spells.

Leaf litter provides insulation during cold periods. When temperatures and humidity become favorable, ticks climb vegetation and resume questing.

Reducing Exposure During Active Periods

You can lower your risk by avoiding dense vegetation when practical, using repellents as directed, and wearing clothing that limits exposed skin. These habits matter most during humid spring and summer conditions, fall adult activity, and mild winter weather.

Where Ticks Wait for Hosts

Ticks commonly wait on the edges of trails, tall grass, low shrubs, and leaf litter. They do not jump or fly.

Ticks attach when you brush against vegetation or sit in areas where they are questing. Stay near the center of maintained trails when possible.

Tuck pants into socks, and consider light-colored clothing so you can spot ticks more easily. Use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label.

Tick Checks and Prompt Bite Response

Perform tick checks after time outdoors, even during fall or winter warm spells. Inspect your legs, waist, scalp, hairline, behind your knees, and other warm, hidden areas.

Check clothing and outdoor gear. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers.

Grasp it close to the skin, pull upward steadily, and clean the bite area and your hands. Prompt removal can reduce the chance of some infections.

Disease Awareness After a Bite

Watch the bite site and your health in the days and weeks afterward.

Seek medical advice if you develop a spreading rash, fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or other concerning symptoms.

Ticks can transmit illnesses such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Tell a healthcare professional when and where the bite happened. Let them know how long the tick may have stayed attached, and whether you saved the tick for identification.
