Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI, can cause an expanding red rash after certain lone star tick bites, sometimes with fatigue or mild flu-like symptoms. Its appearance can resemble a Lyme disease rash, so a clinician may need to consider your location and exposure.

Tularemia may cause fever, an ulcer at the bite site, swollen lymph nodes, or a sore throat, depending on how infection occurred. Tick paralysis results from a toxin from an attached tick and may cause weakness or paralysis that moves upward through the body.

Progressive weakness, trouble breathing, confusion, or facial drooping requires emergency care.

Remove an Attached Tick Safely

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

Do not twist, crush, burn, or cover the tick with petroleum jelly or another substance. If mouthparts remain in the skin and you cannot easily remove them, clean the area and let the skin heal rather than repeatedly digging at it.

Call a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, a spreading rash, significant headache, fatigue, body aches, joint pain, an ulcer, swollen glands, or worsening redness after a bite. Tell them the date and location of the exposure, how long the tick may have been attached, and whether you saved it.

Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, severe weakness, paralysis, confusion, fainting, or signs of a severe allergic reaction. A clinician may use your symptoms, geography, examination, and selected lab tests to guide treatment.

Reduce Exposure Outdoors and at Home

When you walk near tall grass or shrubs, wear long sleeves and tuck your pants into your socks. Choose light-colored clothing so you can spot ticks more easily.

Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin to exposed skin as directed. Use permethrin-treated clothing or gear according to the label.

After you come indoors, check your body, children, pets, clothing, and gear. Shower soon afterward and place dry clothing in a hot dryer to help remove unattached ticks.
