What to Do After Finding an Attached Tick

Do not twist, crush, burn, smother, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly or nail polish. CDC tick-removal guidance recommends removing ticks promptly instead of waiting for health care.

Stay near the center of maintained trails. Avoid brushing against tall grass and low shrubs.

Wash outdoor clothing after use. Use a hot dryer when appropriate, since heat kills ticks hiding in fabric.
