Ticks cannot fly or jump. They usually reach you when you brush against nearby vegetation, and the tick latches onto your clothing, shoes, skin, or a pet.

Ticks are small arachnids. They rely on climbing, waiting, and gripping to find hosts.

Their behavior may seem mysterious, especially when you find a tick on your scalp or neck. Most likely, it crawled upward after making contact with your lower body.

Ticks do not have wings, and they cannot leap like fleas.

They move by crawling across soil, leaf litter, grass, animals, clothing, and skin. Research describes questing as their main way to encounter hosts, not flying or jumping (tick movement mechanics).

Why Ticks Are Arachnids, Not Insects

Ticks belong to the arachnid group, which also includes spiders and mites.

Adult ticks typically have eight legs, while insects have six.
