Ticks do not disappear just because winter arrives. During hard freezes, many become inactive, but protected ticks can survive beneath snow, leaf litter, and soil.

When temperatures rise above freezing and the ground begins to thaw, some ticks move onto vegetation and seek a host.

Can There Be Ticks in Winter? What to Know

You can still get tick bites during winter, especially on mild days when you walk through wooded areas, brush, or exposed leaf litter.

Adult blacklegged ticks, sometimes called deer ticks, can remain active during winter warm spells and may transmit tick-borne diseases.

A few simple precautions can reduce your risk.

When Winter Conditions Allow Tick Activity

Winter weather usually lowers tick activity rather than eliminating it. Temperature, moisture, snow cover, and shelter determine whether ticks remain hidden or move onto vegetation.

Why Adult Blacklegged Ticks Reappear During Thaws

Adult blacklegged ticks, also called black-legged ticks or deer ticks, often become active during fall and winter thaws. When temperatures rise several degrees above freezing, they leave protected areas and search for a host.

You may encounter them on a sunny day after frozen ground starts to thaw, particularly along wooded paths with little snow.

A mild winter day does not guarantee tick activity, but it creates more opportunity than a sustained deep freeze.

Frozen Ground, Snow Cover, and Reduced Movement

Frozen ground makes movement difficult, and persistent cold reduces activity. Snow cover can form an insulating layer that protects ticks from extreme temperatures, but a deep, continuous layer may limit their access to vegetation and passing hosts.

Melting patches, trail edges, and areas with exposed leaves offer easier routes. You are more likely to encounter ticks in these sheltered, partially thawed places than on an exposed trail covered by compact snow.

Where Ticks Shelter in Leaf Litter and Soil

Ticks remain beneath leaf litter, loose soil, brush, and other debris where moisture and insulation reduce exposure to cold and drying. These small microhabitats stay less extreme than the air above them.

Pay attention when you walk through woodland edges, dense vegetation, or leaf-covered ground. Research on overwintering ticks shows that freezing weather can make ticks dormant without reliably killing them.

What Cold Weather Means for Tick Survival and Disease Risk

Cold weather changes when ticks move, not necessarily whether they survive. In the northeast and other regions with suitable habitat, adult ticks may emerge during thaws, and an active infected tick can still transmit disease.

Dormancy Is Not the Same as Dying

A hard freeze often slows or stops tick movement, but protected ticks survive beneath snow, leaves, and soil. Once conditions improve, they resume host-seeking behavior.

That is why a warm winter day can bring a risk that seems surprising.

Why Mild Winters Do Not Automatically Mean More Nymphs

Winter conditions affect different tick life stages in different ways. Adult blacklegged ticks are often the stage most associated with winter activity, while nymphs typically become more active during spring and summer.

A mild winter may extend opportunities for adult movement, but it does not automatically produce more nymphs. Moisture, snow insulation, host availability, temperature patterns, and conditions later in the year all influence tick survival and development.

Lyme Disease and Other Tick-Borne Diseases

An active infected tick can transmit Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases when it attaches to you, even during winter. Risk varies by tick species, location, habitat, and the length of attachment.

After outdoor time, check your skin, clothing, gear, and pets.

If you develop a spreading rash, fever, headache, fatigue, or muscle aches after a bite, contact a healthcare professional and mention when and where you were exposed.

How to Prevent Winter Tick Bites

Treat winter as a lower-risk season, not a risk-free season. Checks, appropriate clothing, tick repellents, pet protection, and sensible yard maintenance help limit contact with ticks carried by deer, rodents, and other wildlife.

Check Yourself, Children, and Pets After Outdoor Time

After hiking, yard work, or play near woods, inspect exposed skin and clothing. Focus on the scalp, hairline, neck, armpits, waist, groin, behind the knees, cuffs, and footwear.

Check children carefully, then inspect dogs and cats around the ears, collar, neck, legs, and toes. Ask your veterinarian about year-round tick prevention if your pet spends time outdoors.

If you find an attached tick, grasp it close to the skin with fine-tipped tweezers and pull upward steadily. Clean the bite area and your hands afterward.

Use Clothing and Tick Repellents Wisely

Wear light-colored clothing so you can spot ticks more easily. Tuck pants into socks, stay on cleared trails when practical, and avoid brushing against leaf litter, tall grass, and dense brush.

Use EPA-registered tick repellents according to the label. Permethrin-treated clothing can add protection, but you should never apply permethrin products directly to your skin unless the product label specifically allows it.

Make Yards Less Inviting to Ticks and Wildlife

Keep leaf accumulation, brush, and wood piles away from areas where you frequently sit or play.

A dry strip between lawns and wooded edges may also reduce contact with tick-friendly vegetation.

Rodents and deer can bring ticks close to your home. Secure food and trash, trim overgrown vegetation, and discourage wildlife from gathering near high-use areas.
