Blacklegged Ticks in the Northeast and Midwest

The blacklegged tick, also called the black-legged tick or deer tick, is known scientifically as Ixodes scapularis. It lives in the Northeast and Midwest, where you may find it in wooded areas, leaf litter, and brushy habitat.

Blacklegged ticks can transmit Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, and other infections. Their estimated range does not mean every location has the same abundance or disease risk, so county-level information matters.

Lone Star and American Dog Ticks Across the East

Lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum, live across the East, South, and Midwest. They readily bite people and may transmit ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and other pathogens. Bites can sometimes be followed by a persistent circular rash or other reactions.

American dog ticks, Dermacentor variabilis, are distributed east of the Rocky Mountains, with some western populations. They can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia, with spring and summer often bringing greater bite risk.

Western and Rocky Mountain Tick Ranges

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, lives in the Rocky Mountain states and southwestern Canada, especially at elevations from about 4,000 to 10,500 feet. It can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia.

The western black-legged tick, found on the West Coast, is a separate species from the eastern blacklegged tick. Tick species and disease patterns vary across western habitats, so regional guidance is more reliable than assuming all ticks carry the same infections.

Brown Dog, Gulf Coast, and Emerging Ticks

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, lives worldwide and primarily uses dogs as hosts. In the southwestern United States and along the U.S.-Mexico border, it can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and may also bite people.

The Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum, lives mainly in the Southeast, with some populations in the Northeast, Midwest, and Southwest. The Asian longhorned tick has also been reported in multiple eastern states, and research continues on its public health significance.

Tick species occur across North America and many other regions, including Hawaii, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Antarctica does not have naturally occurring tick populations.

Checks and Precautions After Outdoor Time

You can lower your risk by combining protective clothing, quick inspections, and prompt removal. Pay attention to warm, concealed areas on your body and your pet, especially after visiting tick-prone areas.

Where to Look on People and Pets

Start tick checks before leaving the trail or yard, then repeat them at home. Inspect your scalp, ears, behind the ears, neck, armpits, waist, groin area, and behind the knees, using a mirror for areas you cannot see.

Check pets around the ears, collar, toes, legs, belly, and tail. Run your fingers slowly through the fur, and inspect bedding, carriers, and outdoor gear if your dog has visited dense vegetation.

Clothing Choices for Tick-Prone Areas

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed shoes when you enter brushy or grassy habitat. Tuck pants into socks when practical and choose light-colored clothing so crawling ticks are easier to spot.

Use an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Afterward, place outdoor clothing in a dryer on high heat when appropriate for the fabric, and wash it according to care instructions.

What to Do When You Find an Attached Tick

Remove an attached tick promptly with clean, fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp it close to the skin and pull upward with steady pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands.

Do not crush, burn, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly or other substances. If possible, save it in a sealed container or take a clear photo, and note the date and location of the tick bite.

Watch for an expanding rash, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or other new symptoms after a bite. Contact a healthcare provider promptly and explain when and where the tick attached.
