You may encounter it in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

People often call Ixodes scapularis the deer tick.

It can acquire Borrelia burgdorferi from infected rodents and later transmit the bacterium during a feeding session.

Western Blacklegged Ticks Along the Pacific Coast

Like its eastern relative, this Ixodes tick can become infected after feeding on reservoir hosts.

Cool, moist woodland and heavy vegetation provide suitable conditions, especially where leaf litter and brush remain damp.

Where Exposure Is Most Likely

You are more likely to encounter infected ticks in wooded areas, brush, tall grass, and leaf litter than on open, dry ground.

Pets can carry ticks into your home even when they show no signs of illness.

Contact a healthcare provider if you develop an expanding rash, fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, or joint pain after possible exposure.
