Ticks remain present when winter arrives. You can still encounter ticks during a mild winter day, especially in sheltered, humid areas where the ground is not frozen solid.

Their activity varies by species, life stage, temperature, snow cover, and habitat.

Ticks generally enter diapause rather than true hibernation. Many slow down beneath leaf litter or snow, then resume host-seeking activity during winter thaws.

The end of fall does not automatically end tick season. A winter walk, yard project, or outing with your dog can still create opportunities for tick bites and tick-borne diseases, so sensible checks and prevention remain useful.

Dormant, Not Truly Hibernating

Ticks often enter diapause, a biologically controlled pause that slows development and reproduction. They are less active in cold conditions, yet they can respond quickly when photoperiod, ground temperature, and moisture become favorable.

Hibernation usually describes a prolonged reduction in body temperature and metabolism in animals. Tick diapause is different because it is a hormonally regulated pause in development and activity, often influenced by shortening daylight.

A tick in diapause does not necessarily remain helpless or permanently inactive. Adult ticks can wait in protected microhabitats and resume host-seeking activity when the environment becomes suitable for finding a blood meal.

Why Photoperiod and Temperature Matter

The shortening photoperiod, or day length, helps signal seasonal change. Temperature then affects whether a tick can move, climb vegetation, and search for a host.

Cold air above the ground does not always match conditions beneath leaves or snow. Research on ticks remaining active during cold weather shows that sheltered ground-level conditions can reduce cold stress and help some species survive.

What Happens During a Winter Thaw

During a winter thaw, sunlight and warmer ground can reactivate ticks for short periods. They may climb low vegetation and extend their front legs in a behavior called questing, waiting for a passing person, pet, or wild animal.

Activity can stop again when temperatures fall. A single mild afternoon does not create continuous winter activity, but it can provide enough time for a tick to attach and begin feeding.

Where Ticks Survive Cold Weather

Ticks use protected spaces that buffer temperature changes and preserve moisture. Leaf litter, soil, snow cover, and natural cryoprotectants help ticks survive even when exposed air temperatures drop well below freezing.

Leaf litter provides a layer of insulation between a tick and rapidly changing air temperatures. Ticks may remain among leaves, organic debris, or shallow soil where ground temperature changes more slowly.

These locations also help limit desiccation, which occurs when a tick loses too much moisture. Damp woodland edges, brush, and undisturbed yard debris can offer more suitable winter shelter than exposed, dry areas.

Snow Cover and Snowpack as Insulation

Snowpack can act as an insulating blanket. Although the surface may be bitterly cold, the space beneath snow can remain more stable than the open air, particularly where snow covers leaf litter and soil.

Snow can protect ticks from temperature extremes while also restricting movement until a thaw exposes warmer, accessible ground.

Moisture is important because ticks are vulnerable to drying. Leaf litter and humid soil can help them retain water during winter.

Ticks also produce natural cryoprotectants, compounds that help protect cells from freezing injury. These adaptations support tick survival beneath leaf litter and snow without making every tick active throughout the season.

Which Ticks May Be Active in Winter

Winter activity differs among species. Blacklegged ticks are especially important for human health because adult ticks may quest during mild weather, while American dog ticks and lone star ticks are usually less noticeable in colder months.

Blacklegged Ticks and Deer Ticks

The blacklegged tick, or deer tick, is Ixodes scapularis. In much of the eastern and central United States, adult blacklegged ticks are active in fall and can remain active during winter thaws.

They are an important vector of Lyme disease. If temperatures rise enough for movement and the ground is not sealed by ice, an adult tick may search for a blood meal on you, your dog, or wildlife.

The separate winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, is strongly associated with deer, moose, and other wildlife. It rarely represents the same human-biting concern as blacklegged ticks, but it can affect wildlife significantly.

Why American Dog Ticks and Lone Star Ticks Differ

American dog ticks and lone star ticks generally show their greatest activity during warmer seasons. Cold weather can greatly reduce their movement, so you may encounter fewer of them during winter.

That reduced activity does not mean every tick has died. Sheltered conditions and unusual warmth can affect local timing, and regional weather patterns vary widely.

Life Stages That Can Reappear After Cold Weather

Adult ticks are often the winter stage most likely to be encountered, particularly among blacklegged ticks. Nymphs are typically more active during warmer parts of the year, though seasonal patterns can vary by location.

A cold snap may pause activity without eliminating the population. Many ticks survive winter in protected habitats and can reappear when conditions improve.

What Winter Tick Risk Means for People and Pets

Winter usually lowers tick activity, not necessarily tick risk to zero. Climate change, milder winters, local habitat, and brief thaws can shift the timing of tick season and disease transmission.

Milder winters can create more opportunities for ticks to move and seek hosts. Climate change may also influence where species survive and when seasonal activity begins or ends.

The effect is not identical everywhere. Snow depth, humidity, vegetation, and repeated freezing all shape local conditions, so regional forecasts and public health guidance provide the best context.

When to Do Tick Checks

Do a tick check after winter hikes, yard work, brush clearing, or time around leaf litter. Check your clothing and skin, then examine your dog carefully around the ears, collar, toes, groin, and underarms.

Prompt removal helps reduce the chance of some tick-borne illnesses. If you find an attached tick, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers by grasping close to the skin and pulling upward steadily.

Why Winter Prevention Still Matters

Keep veterinarian-recommended pet prevention on schedule unless your veterinarian advises otherwise. An unexpected thaw can leave your dog or cat unprotected if you miss winter treatments.

You can reduce habitat around frequently used areas by clearing excess leaf litter. Trim vegetation and keep firewood and brush away from the home.

Remember that ticks are arachnids, not ants or flies. Methods designed for insects like ants or flies do not automatically prevent tick bites or tick-borne illnesses.

Spend a few minutes on prevention and tick checks to help reduce disease transmission. This routine lowers the risk of Lyme disease during the colder months.
