Winter does not automatically kill ticks. Their survival depends on species, life stage, temperature, humidity, shelter, and access to a blood meal.

Many ticks become inactive in freezing weather. Others die from dehydration, starvation, extreme heat, injury, predators, or natural aging.

Why Freezing Weather Does Not Eliminate Every Tick

Cold weather usually makes ticks inactive instead of killing them immediately. Leaf litter, soil, snow, and vegetation can insulate ticks from rapid temperature changes.

Flooding, fungal disease, pesticides, physical damage, and predators such as birds, spiders, ants, and rodents also affect tick survival. Diatomaceous earth can damage a tick’s outer surface and increase drying when it makes direct contact.

Survival Times By Tick Species And Life Stage

A female lays eggs after feeding and often dies afterward. Egg survival depends on protected habitat and whether conditions stay moist enough for development.

Tick Larvae, Tick Nymphs, And Adult Ticks

Tick larvae have six legs, while nymphs and adults have eight. Larvae and nymphs need a blood meal from available hosts, which can include mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Failure to find a host can stop development and lead to death. Adult ticks may wait longer in protected vegetation, but they still lose moisture and energy over time.

Blacklegged Ticks And Deer Ticks

Blacklegged ticks include Ixodes scapularis in the eastern United States. People commonly call this species the deer tick.

These ticks often take about two years to complete their life cycle in the East. Some western populations take up to three years.

American Dog Ticks And Wood Ticks

These ticks usually become more active during warm seasons. Lone star ticks can tolerate varied outdoor conditions and may remain active through a long warm-season period.

For both American dog ticks and lone star ticks, access to hosts, humidity, shade, and temperature strongly influence survival.

Brown Dog Ticks In Homes And Kennels

Brown dog ticks, or Rhipicephalus sanguineus, can persist indoors because they may feed on dogs during multiple life stages. Cracks, baseboards, kennels, bedding, and upholstery provide shelter from drying conditions.

Brown dog ticks can maintain a household problem when dogs repeatedly provide access to blood meals. Recurring infestations may require coordinated pet treatment, cleaning, and licensed pest control.

When Ticks Become Active Again

Ticks can resume movement during mild weather, even after a period of cold. Seasonal activity does not prove that every tick survived, since sheltered individuals may remain inactive while exposed ticks die.

Seasonal Activity And Mortality

Freezing weather can suppress activity without eliminating ticks. When temperatures rise above freezing, surviving ticks may climb vegetation and seek a host.

Dogs and cats can bring ticks indoors. An attached tick may remain unnoticed around ears, collars, toes, armpits, or the tail.

Brown dog ticks are especially capable of persisting around kennels and resting areas. Use veterinarian-approved prevention for pets.

Wash or heat-treat bedding when safe. Vacuum cracks, rugs, upholstery, and baseboards.

Reducing Tick Survival Around People And Pets

You can make your home and yard less favorable to ticks by reducing humid shelter, checking pets and gear, using labeled repellents, and removing attached ticks quickly.

Prevention works best as a routine rather than a response to one tick.

Removing An Attached Tick Safely

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the attached tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an appropriate antiseptic.

Do not twist, jerk, crush, burn, or squeeze the tick. Avoid petroleum jelly, nail polish, rubbing alcohol, or household chemicals on an attached tick.

Place a removed tick in alcohol, seal it in a container, wrap it tightly in tape, or flush it.

Clothing, Yard, And Pet Prevention

Wear long pants and light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot. Apply a labeled tick repellent to exposed skin.

Use clothing treated with permethrin only according to product directions. Dry washable clothing on high heat before washing when the fabric allows.

Keep grass trimmed and remove leaf litter near activity areas. Create a dry, clear border between lawns and wooded edges.

Inspect pets after outdoor time. Never apply human tick products to animals unless a veterinarian confirms they are safe.
