Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes scapularis)
The blacklegged tick, or black-legged tick, is scientifically known as Ixodes scapularis. Many people call it the deer tick, especially in the Northeast and Upper Midwest.
This species lives widely across the eastern United States, including wooded areas where wildlife hosts are present. Immature ticks are tiny and hard to spot, while adults are larger and easier to identify.
Both stages can transmit Lyme disease if infected. Blacklegged ticks must first acquire Borrelia from an infected host before they can pass the bacterium to you.
Western Blacklegged Tick (Ixodes pacificus)
The western blacklegged tick, or Ixodes pacificus, is the main Lyme vector along parts of the Pacific Coast. You can find it in California, Oregon, and Washington.
This tick prefers wooded and brushy environments with leaf litter and wildlife activity. Although less widespread than Ixodes scapularis, it still poses a Lyme disease risk in suitable Pacific Coast habitats.

Several Ixodes tick species transmit Lyme borreliosis outside the United States. In Europe, Ixodes ricinus (castor bean tick) and Ixodes persulcatus (taiga tick) play important roles.

Why Some Ticks Become Infected
Ticks are not born carrying Lyme disease. They usually pick up Borrelia burgdorferi while feeding on an infected animal.

What To Do After a Tick Bite
A tick bite calls for calm, prompt action. Remove the tick correctly and monitor for symptoms that could indicate Lyme disease or another tick-borne disease.

Safe Tick Removal Steps
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.
Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly. If mouthparts remain in your skin and you cannot remove them easily, let the skin heal.
Take a clear photo or save the tick in a sealed container if identification may help. Note the date and location of the bite.

Symptoms That Need Medical Attention
Watch for an expanding rash called erythema migrans (EM rash), which may appear days to weeks after a bite. It does not always look like a bull’s-eye, and some people develop no rash.

Other Tick-Borne Diseases to Know
Blacklegged ticks can carry pathogens besides Borrelia. Depending on your region, a bite may also expose you to babesiosis, anaplasmosis, or other tick-borne diseases.
Ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis can cause fever and flu-like illness. Babesiosis may cause fever, chills, fatigue, and anemia.
Tell your healthcare professional where and when the bite occurred, especially if symptoms are severe, persistent, or do not fit typical Lyme disease.
Reducing Exposure in Tick Habitat
You can lower your risk by combining clothing, repellents, outdoor choices, and thorough tick checks. These steps matter in wooded areas, tall grass, brush, and leaf litter, where ticks wait for passing hosts.

Personal Protection Outdoors
Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent according to its label. Products containing DEET can protect exposed skin.
Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can help repel or kill ticks on fabric. Wear light-colored clothing so you can spot small arachnids more easily.
Long sleeves, long pants tucked into socks, and closed shoes provide additional barriers. Stay near the center of maintained trails and avoid brushing against tall grass or low vegetation when possible.
Tick Checks and Yard Awareness
Check your clothing and body after outdoor activities. Pay attention to the scalp, hairline, ears, waist, groin, armpits, and behind the knees.
Shower soon after coming indoors to help remove unattached ticks. Put clothing in a hot dryer to kill ticks on dry fabrics.
