In the United States, blacklegged ticks, including the eastern blacklegged tick and western blacklegged tick, spread Lyme disease through a tick bite. Only infected ticks can transmit Lyme.

What Ticks Cause Lyme Disease in the U.S.

The eastern species spreads Lyme across the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and north-central states. The western species spreads it along the Pacific Coast.

Knowing which ticks cause Lyme disease helps you judge exposure and recognize symptoms that require medical care.

The Lyme Disease Vectors in the United States

Ticks in the Ixodes genus are the main Lyme disease vectors in the United States. These ticks transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the primary bacterium that causes Lyme here.

Blacklegged Tick: Ixodes Scapularis

The eastern blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is also called the black-legged tick or deer tick. This tick spreads Lyme in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and upper Midwest.

These ticks are tiny, especially as nymphs. They live in wooded and brushy areas with leaf litter, moisture, and wildlife.

Western Blacklegged Tick: Ixodes Pacificus

The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, spreads Lyme along the Pacific Coast in parts of California, Oregon, and Washington.

This tick lives in forests, woodland edges, and areas with dense ground cover. If infected, it can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi through a bite.

Why “Deer Tick” Can Be a Misleading Name

“Deer tick” refers to a common host, not a separate disease process. Deer provide blood meals and help ticks move through landscapes.

Several tick species may feed on deer. For accurate risk, focus on whether the tick looks like an Ixodes species and where you found it.

How These Ticks Become Infected and Transmit Lyme

Immature blacklegged ticks acquire Borrelia when they feed on infected wildlife. Later, nymphs and adults can pass the bacteria to another host during feeding.

The Role of White-Footed Mice and Chipmunks

White-footed mice and chipmunks are important reservoirs for Borrelia burgdorferi. Young ticks can become infected after feeding on these animals.

Lone Star Ticks and Other Tickborne Diseases

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is common in the eastern and southern United States. It does not spread Lyme disease, but its bite can cause irritation and other illnesses such as ehrlichiosis.

Other tickborne diseases include babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Some blacklegged ticks can transmit more than one pathogen, so symptoms after a tick bite should not always be attributed to Lyme.

Why Species Identification Does Not Replace Medical Advice

Identifying the tick species can help estimate risk, but it does not confirm if the tick carried Borrelia. Ticks can be damaged during removal, and symptoms may appear even if you do not remember a bite.

Contact a clinician if you develop an expanding rash, fever, facial weakness, severe headache, joint swelling, or flu-like symptoms after possible exposure.

Lowering Risk After Time Outdoors

You can reduce risk by avoiding tick habitat, using an effective tick repellent, and checking your body after outdoor activity. Prompt tick removal lowers the chance of infection.

Where Blacklegged Ticks Are Commonly Found

Blacklegged ticks live in moist wooded areas, leaf litter, tall grass, brush, and dense ground cover. Staying near the center of maintained trails can reduce contact.

After spending time outdoors, inspect your ankles, waist, scalp, behind your knees, armpits, and other skin folds. Check children and pets carefully, as ticks can hide in hair and around collars.

Repellents and Clothing Protection

Use a registered tick repellent as directed. Products with DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthane-diol can help repel ticks.

Wear light-colored clothing and tuck pants into socks. Consider permethrin-treated clothing in high-risk areas.

A shower and clothing change after coming indoors can help remove unattached ticks.

Tick Removal and When to Contact a Clinician

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin. Pull upward with steady pressure.

Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Do not burn, crush, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly.

If you want help identifying the tick, save a clear photo. Contact a clinician if the tick may have been attached for a prolonged period or if symptoms appear.

In some circumstances, a clinician may prescribe preventive doxycycline.
