Finding a tick on your skin can be alarming, especially when you cannot tell whether it is a harmless species or one that may carry disease. Most tick bites do not lead to illness, yet you should treat every attached tick as a potential exposure until you identify it and remove it promptly.

No tick is completely harmless by appearance alone. Risk depends on the species, location in the United States or North America, whether the tick fed on an infected host, and how long it remained attached.

A tick that is merely crawling on you has not had an opportunity to transmit a pathogen through feeding. A tick removed soon after attachment may also present less risk than one that has fed for a prolonged period.

Why Deer and Pets Can Still Bring Ticks Close to Home

Blacklegged Ticks and Lyme Disease

Blacklegged ticks, including Ixodes scapularis, can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium responsible for most Lyme disease in the United States. People often call them deer ticks, though deer are only one host in their life cycle.

The risk is higher in regions where Lyme disease is established and when the tick has fed long enough to transmit bacteria. Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms develop after a tick bite.

Blacklegged ticks can also transmit other pathogens, including Babesia parasites. A tick’s small size, particularly as a nymph, does not make it harmless.

Ticks Linked to RMSF, Ehrlichiosis, and Tularemia

American dog ticks, wood ticks, lone star ticks, and other species may be associated with spotted fever rickettsioses, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, also called RMSF. Some ticks can spread ehrlichiosis, caused by Ehrlichia bacteria, or tularemia.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, chills, muscle aches, nausea, or a rash. Prompt medical evaluation matters because illnesses such as RMSF can become serious quickly.

STARI and Other Conditions With Overlapping Symptoms

Lone star tick bites may be followed by Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI, which can resemble Lyme disease. The cause of STARI is not established, and the lone star tick is not considered a confirmed Lyme disease vector.

Tick bites may also be associated with reactions or illnesses involving Bartonella, though the role of ticks in transmitting Bartonella to humans remains uncertain. Do not self-diagnose from a tick photograph or rash alone.

What to Do After Finding an Attached Tick

Treat an attached tick as a reason for prompt action, not panic. Remove it correctly, record when and where you found it, and monitor for changes that could indicate tickborne diseases.

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure, then clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser.

Do not twist forcefully, burn the tick, or apply petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat. The CDC tick removal guidance recommends removing an attached tick as soon as possible rather than delaying removal to reach a healthcare provider.

If mouthparts remain in the skin and cannot be removed easily, let the skin heal and seek medical advice if irritation develops. Avoid relying on commercial tick testing to determine whether you need treatment, since a positive result does not prove transmission.

Symptoms That Should Prompt Medical Advice

Contact a healthcare provider if you develop fever, rash, chills, headache, fatigue, joint pain, muscle aches, facial weakness, or unusual flu-like symptoms after a bite. Tell the clinician when and where the exposure occurred and describe the tick if you have a photo.

Seek urgent care for severe headache, confusion, trouble breathing, significant weakness, or a rapidly worsening illness. Symptoms can appear days or weeks after exposure, so keep the bite date in your records.

When Weakness May Signal Tick Paralysis

Rarely, a tick can cause tick paralysis when it releases a toxin during feeding.

Early signs may include leg weakness, unsteadiness, tingling, or progressive difficulty moving. These symptoms can spread upward.

Remove the tick immediately and seek emergency medical care if weakness gets worse, swallowing becomes difficult, or breathing feels impaired.

Do not wait for a rash or fever, since tick paralysis may occur without the typical signs of infection.
