Ticks are tiny arachnids, not insects. They feed on blood from people and animals.
Some ticks carry disease-causing bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can enter your body during a bite. A tick can also cause irritation, allergic reactions, or, in rare cases, tick paralysis.

Most tick bites do not cause illness. If you remove the tick promptly and monitor for symptoms, you can greatly reduce your risk.
The specific danger depends on the tick species, the pathogen it carries, your location, and how long the tick remains attached.
Tickborne diseases can range from treatable bacterial infections to serious viral or parasitic illnesses. Knowing the common risks, early warning signs, and safe removal steps helps you respond calmly after outdoor exposure.
What Ticks Can Transmit to People
An infected tick can pass a pathogen into your bloodstream while feeding. In the United States, those pathogens include bacteria, viruses, and parasites.
Different tick species transmit different illnesses.

Bacterial Infections
Bacteria cause several common tickborne diseases. Blacklegged ticks mainly spread Lyme disease, which is linked to Borrelia burgdorferi.
According to the CDC’s explanation of Lyme disease transmission, ticks usually need to remain attached for more than 24 hours to transmit infection. Removing the tick quickly is valuable.
Other bacterial illnesses include ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), and tularemia. Early antibiotic treatment is important for ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, and RMSF, which can become severe quickly.
A lone star tick bite can cause Southern tick-associated rash illness, or STARI, which may look like Lyme disease. The cause of STARI is not fully established, and a healthcare professional should decide on testing and treatment.
Viral Infections
Some ticks carry viruses that affect the nervous system or cause fever and inflammation. Examples include Powassan virus and Heartland virus.
Viral tickborne illnesses do not respond to antibiotics, so medical care focuses on monitoring and treating symptoms.

Parasitic Infections
Babesiosis is caused by microscopic parasites that infect red blood cells. It can produce fever, chills, fatigue, and anemia.

The deer tick, also called the black-legged or blacklegged tick, spreads Lyme disease in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Upper Midwest. The western black-legged tick can spread Lyme disease along parts of the Pacific Coast.
Nymphal ticks are especially important for exposure because they are very small and active when people spend more time outdoors. Young ticks often feed on rodents and can acquire Borrelia burgdorferi before feeding on a person.
Lone Star and Dog Ticks

The American dog tick can transmit RMSF and tularemia. The Rocky Mountain wood tick lives in parts of the Rocky Mountains and can transmit Colorado tick fever and, rarely, cause tick paralysis.
Brown dog ticks may live around homes and kennels and can transmit certain bacterial diseases.
Where Exposure Is Most Common
You can encounter ticks in wooded areas, leaf litter, tall grass, brush, and places where wildlife travels. Ticks can live around yards, trails, parks, and outdoor work areas.

Symptoms to Watch for After a Bite
A small red spot or mild itching can occur after an ordinary bite and does not automatically mean you have an infection. Watch your health for several weeks, since symptoms may appear days or weeks after exposure.

Early Flu-Like Symptoms
Possible early symptoms include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. Some infections also cause nausea, vomiting, or unusual sensitivity to light.

Rashes and Lyme Disease

Seek prompt medical advice for fever, rash, worsening headache, significant joint pain, faintness, or severe fatigue after a possible bite. Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, facial paralysis, confusion, severe weakness, or a rapidly worsening illness.
Tell your clinician when and where the exposure occurred, whether you saved the tick, and how long it may have been attached.
Reducing Risk After Tick Exposure
Reducing exposure remains your best defense against infected ticks. After outdoor activity, inspect your skin, scalp, clothing, gear, and pets, then remove any attached tick as soon as possible.

Removing an Attached Tick
Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Do not twist sharply, crush the tick against your skin, or cover it with petroleum jelly, nail polish, or heat.
If mouthparts remain embedded and you cannot remove them easily, let the skin heal while monitoring it, or ask a healthcare professional for advice.
Monitoring the Bite and Your Health
Record the date and location of the bite, take a photograph, and keep the tick in a sealed container if identification may help. A tick test does not reliably determine whether you became infected, so your symptoms and clinical evaluation matter more.
Watch for fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, fatigue, joint pain, or rash during the following weeks. The CDC’s tick guidance recommends seeking care when symptoms develop after exposure.
Preventing Future Bites
Wear long pants and light-colored clothing. Tuck pants into your socks and stay on cleared trails when possible.
Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. You can also use permethrin-treated clothing for hiking, camping, or outdoor work.
After you come inside, shower and change clothes. Run suitable garments through a hot dryer.
Check children, pets, and hard-to-see areas such as the scalp, behind the ears, waist, groin, and backs of the knees.
