Ways to Reduce Your Chances of a Tick Bite

You can reduce risk by creating a physical barrier, using an appropriate repellent, limiting contact with tick habitats, and checking your body and pets promptly.

Create a Clothing Barrier

Wear protective clothing when you enter brush or wooded areas. Choose light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot, along with long sleeves and long pants.

In higher-risk areas, tuck your pants into your socks. This closes a common route to your ankles and makes crawling ticks more visible during a clothing check.

Choose Repellents Carefully

Follow the product label when using DEET or another EPA-registered repellent on exposed skin. For clothing and gear, permethrin-treated clothing can help reduce tick attachment when used according to its label.

Do not apply permethrin directly to your skin. Use only products approved for the intended surface, and follow age and application instructions.

Make Yards Less Tick-Friendly

Keep grass trimmed and remove excess leaf litter, dense brush, and unused woodpiles near areas where you sit or play. A dry, clear border between lawns and wooded areas can reduce direct movement from tick habitats into frequently used spaces.

Check Yourself and Pets After Outdoor Time

Perform tick checks as soon as you return indoors. Examine your ankles, legs, waistband, groin, underarms, scalp, behind the ears, and behind the knees, then shower and change clothes.

If You Find an Attached Tick

Do not wait for the tick to fall off. Prompt removal reduces the time it can remain attached and helps you record useful details about the bite.

Remove It Promptly With Tweezers

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.

After removal, clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Do not crush the tick with your fingers, twist it forcefully, or cover it with petroleum jelly or heat.

Monitor the Bite and Know When to Seek Care

Save the tick in a sealed container or take a clear photograph if you want help identifying it.

Note the date and location of the bite. Watch for an expanding rash, fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or joint pain.

Not every Lyme disease case includes a rash. Several causes can lead to these symptoms.

Contact a health care professional if you develop symptoms. Seek care if the tick was attached for an uncertain length of time or if you live in or visited an area where Lyme disease is common.
