Ticks Who Carry Lyme Disease in the United States

Ticks are small arachnids, not insects. Only certain ticks in the United States transmit Lyme disease.

Blacklegged ticks—also called deer ticks—carry Lyme disease. Ixodes scapularis lives in the East and upper Midwest, and Ixodes pacificus lives along the Pacific Coast.

Other tick bites can spread different tick-borne diseases. Identifying the tick and watching for symptoms is important.

Ticks Who Carry Lyme Disease in the United States

You may encounter ticks in wooded areas, leaf litter, tall grass, brush, stone walls, and lawn edges. Ticks become a Lyme disease risk when they acquire Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes most Lyme disease in the United States, from an infected host.

Knowing which ticks carry Lyme disease helps you judge a tick bite more accurately. Removing ticks promptly and seeking medical advice when symptoms appear can reduce the chance of complications.

The Proven Lyme Disease Vectors

In the United States, two blacklegged tick species primarily transmit Lyme disease. Their ranges differ.

Small mammals commonly infect young ticks, while deer support adult tick reproduction.

Eastern And Midwestern Blacklegged Ticks

Ixodes scapularis, the eastern blacklegged tick, is commonly called the black-legged tick or deer tick. It is the main Lyme disease vector in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and north-central United States.

You may encounter this tick in states such as Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, especially near forests, brush, and shaded vegetation. Nymphs are tiny and cause many human infections because you can miss them during a routine check.

Adults are larger and easier to spot, though their dark bodies can still blend into clothing or skin. The name “deer tick” can be misleading.

Deer are important hosts for adult blacklegged ticks, but small mammals and some birds are more important sources of Borrelia burgdorferi.

Western Blacklegged Ticks Along The Pacific Coast

Ixodes pacificus, the western blacklegged tick, is the main Lyme disease vector along the Pacific Coast. Its range includes parts of California, Oregon, and Washington.

This species can acquire Borrelia burgdorferi from infected wildlife and transmit it during a later blood meal. Risk varies by location, habitat, season, and how long an infected tick remains attached.

How Infected Ticks Pick Up Borrelia

Blacklegged ticks usually acquire Borrelia burgdorferi while feeding on infected small mammals, including white-footed mice, chipmunks, and shrews. They carry the bacterium into their next life stage and transmit it during a later bite.

Deer generally do not infect ticks with Lyme disease. They serve mainly as hosts for adult ticks and help maintain tick populations.

Ticks Commonly Confused With Lyme Carriers

Not every tick species that bites you carries Lyme disease. The American dog tick, Rocky Mountain wood tick, lone star tick, and brown dog tick are associated with other tick-borne diseases.

Each of these ticks has distinct geographic and clinical concerns.

American Dog Ticks And Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever

Dermacentor variabilis, the American dog tick, is widespread across much of the United States. It does not serve as the primary Lyme disease vector but can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and other infections.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, occurs mainly in mountainous areas of the western United States. It can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and Colorado tick fever.

A tick’s appearance alone cannot determine whether it carried a pathogen.

Lone Star Ticks, STARI, And Alpha-Gal Syndrome

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is common across the Southeast, South, and parts of the Midwest. It does not carry Lyme disease but its bite can cause other illnesses and reactions.

Lone star ticks have been associated with ehrlichiosis, tularemia, Heartland virus, and southern tick-associated rash illness (STARI). Their bites may also trigger alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to a carbohydrate found in many mammalian products.

The rash and symptoms can resemble Lyme disease, so medical evaluation is important.

Brown Dog Ticks And Other Tick-Borne Infections

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is found around homes, kennels, and dogs. It is not a typical Lyme disease vector but can spread several infections that affect dogs and, in some circumstances, people.

Because different tick-borne diseases can begin with similar symptoms, tell a clinician when and where the bite occurred, how long the tick was attached, and whether you saved the tick. Do not rely on color or body markings alone for identification.

Risk After A Tick Bite

Your risk after a tick bite depends on the tick species, location, infection prevalence, life stage, and attachment time. Nymphal ticks are especially easy to overlook during peak tick season because they are about poppy-seed sized.

Why Nymphs And Attachment Time Matter

Nymphal ticks are active in late spring and summer. Blacklegged ticks can remain active whenever temperatures permit.

You are more likely to encounter them in wooded areas, tall grass, brush, and leaf litter. Transmission risk generally rises the longer an infected blacklegged tick stays attached.

Removing a tick promptly is valuable even if you do not know its species or how long it has fed.

Symptoms That Need Medical Attention

Watch the bite area and your health for several weeks. Lyme disease may cause an expanding erythema migrans rash, though not everyone develops the classic bull’s-eye appearance.

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, fatigue, headache, chills, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, facial weakness, joint swelling, or other new symptoms after possible exposure. Co-Infections And Other Illnesses

An infected blacklegged tick can carry more than one pathogen. Possible co-infections include babesiosis, anaplasmosis, and Borrelia miyamotoi, which can cause relapsing fever.

Other ticks can transmit Powassan virus and additional tick-borne infections. Seek prompt medical care for severe headache, confusion, breathing difficulty, unusual bruising, persistent fever, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Preventing Bites And Removing Ticks Safely

You can lower your risk with layered protection. Use an EPA-approved tick repellent, cover exposed skin, perform tick checks, and remove attached ticks promptly.

Ticks are arachnids that climb onto passing hosts rather than jumping or flying.

Personal Protection Outdoors

Apply an EPA-approved tick repellent according to its label. Products containing DEET can protect exposed skin.

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can help protect pants, socks, shoes, and outdoor equipment. Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to see.

Tuck pants into socks when practical. Stay near the center of maintained trails and avoid brushing against tall grass or dense vegetation.

Daily Tick Checks And Home Steps

Check your body, children, clothing, and pets after spending time outdoors. Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, behind the ears, underarms, waist, groin, backs of knees, and between the toes.

Place worn clothing in a hot dryer before washing when possible. Showering soon after returning indoors can help remove unattached ticks.

Keeping grass short can reduce favorable habitat near your home.

Proper Tick Removal

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with steady, even pressure.

Clean the bite area and your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based cleanser. Do not twist, crush, burn, or coat the tick with petroleum jelly.

If you cannot easily remove mouthparts that remain in the skin, leave them alone and let the skin heal. Record the date and location of the bite.
