Tick season in Oregon lasts much of the year. Mild, wet conditions keep ticks active, with encounters more likely near vegetation, leaf litter, or wildlife corridors.

Pay close attention when you hike off trail, sit in leaf litter, clear brush, hunt, camp, or walk through tall grass. Dogs can bring unattached ticks into your home after exploring vegetation.

Stay near the center of maintained trails when possible. Keep blankets away from brush and perform a thorough tick check before entering your vehicle or home.

Tick Species and Disease Risks

Oregon has several tick species, and tick identification helps clinicians assess possible exposure. Disease risk depends on the species, location, attachment time, and symptoms. Many tick bites do not lead to illness.

Western Black-Legged Tick and Lyme Risk

The western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, is sometimes called a deer tick. The related Ixodes scapularis is the main black-legged tick in the eastern and midwestern United States.

Ixodes pacificus can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. It can also transmit Anaplasma phagocytophilum and B. miyamotoi, which cause hard tick relapsing fever. Lyme disease in Oregon is uncommon compared with high-incidence regions, and many cases among Oregon residents are acquired outside the state.

Nymphs are tiny and easy to miss. In most Lyme infections, the tick must stay attached for about 36 to 48 hours or more, so remove them quickly.

Wood, Dog, and Pacific Coast Ticks

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia. The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, and Pacific Coast tick, Dermacentor occidentalis, may also bite people and pets.

The Pacific Coast tick is linked to Pacific Coast tick fever. The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, is closely associated with dogs and can transmit ehrlichiosis in some settings.

Other diseases discussed in tick surveillance include babesiosis and Powassan virus disease, though their presence and frequency vary by region and vector. The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is mainly found in the central and eastern United States. The Asian longhorned tick is an introduced species that needs continued monitoring.

Cabin-Dwelling Soft Ticks

Soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros, including Ornithodoros hermsi, behave differently from hard ticks. They hide in rodent nests at elevations above about 1,500 feet, bite briefly at night, and often go unnoticed.

In Oregon, Borrelia hermsii causes soft tick relapsing fever. If you develop recurrent high fever, chills, sweating, headache, muscle aches, nausea, or vomiting after a cabin stay, seek medical advice. Tell your clinician about cabin exposure, rodent activity, elevation, and travel history.

Preventing Bites Outdoors and at Home

You can prevent tick bites by using protective clothing, repellent, good trail habits, yard maintenance, pet checks, and cabin precautions. Limiting contact with brush and checking your body soon after returning indoors reduces exposure.

Clothing and Repellent Choices

Wear light-colored clothing to spot crawling ticks more easily. Long sleeves, long pants, and pants tucked into socks reduce exposed skin, especially in tall grass or brush.

Apply an EPA-registered insect repellent according to its label. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 can protect exposed skin. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin products labeled for that use, following safety directions.

Trail, Yard, and Pet Precautions

Stay on maintained trails and avoid brushing against vegetation when possible. Keep grass trimmed, remove excess leaf litter, clear brush near frequently used areas, and create a separation between lawns and wooded edges.

Perform a tick check after every outing. Examine the scalp, hairline, behind the ears, neck, armpits, waistband, groin, and behind the knees. Check pets carefully, including between toes, around ears, under collars, and near the tail. Use a veterinarian-recommended tick product.

Cabin and Rodent Precautions

Inspect cabins for rodent nests, droppings, and entry points before sleeping there. Do not disturb nests, since soft ticks may be present in bedding areas, wall voids, attics, or spaces beneath the structure.

Use professional pest control for an active infestation. Seal openings, keep food secured, and wash or heat-dry bedding and clothing after a potentially infested stay.

What To Do After Finding a Tick

Finding a tick can feel unsettling, but quick, careful action lowers the chance of prolonged attachment. Note the date, location, likely exposure area, and whether the tick appears flat or engorged.

Safe Tick Removal

Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to your skin as possible. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure without twisting, squeezing the body, or applying petroleum jelly, heat, alcohol, or other substances while it is attached.

After removal, clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or an appropriate antiseptic. If mouthparts stay embedded and you cannot remove them easily, ask a healthcare professional for advice rather than digging into your skin.

Saving a Tick for Identification

Place the tick in a sealed container or zippered bag with a small piece of damp paper towel. Label it with the date and location of exposure, and avoid handling it with bare fingers.

A clear photograph can also help with identification. Routine commercial testing of an individual tick does not reliably determine whether you will become ill, so do not delay medical care while waiting for identification.

Symptoms That Need Medical Advice

Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, severe headache, unusual fatigue, muscle or joint aches, swollen lymph nodes, or a spreading rash after a tick bite.

A bullseye rash can suggest Lyme disease. Many people do not develop one, and some rashes do not form a classic ring.

Seek prompt advice after possible cabin exposure if fever returns, especially with shaking chills or sweats.

Tell your clinician about the bite or outdoor exposure, the dates involved, the Oregon location, travel outside Oregon, and any saved tick.
