Common symptoms include:

  • Hives, itching, or an itchy rash
  • Swelling of the lips, face, eyelids, or throat
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
  • Heartburn or indigestion
  • Cough, wheezing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing
  • Dizziness or a drop in blood pressure

Symptoms may appear alone or in combination. According to Mayo Clinic’s explanation of alpha-gal syndrome, reactions can range from mild to severe and may involve anaphylaxis.

When to Use Epinephrine and Seek Emergency Care

Use prescribed epinephrine immediately if you have signs of anaphylaxis, such as difficulty breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. An EpiPen or another epinephrine autoinjector treats the emergency, but you still need to call 911 and go to an emergency department.

Antihistamines may help some mild symptoms, yet they do not replace epinephrine for breathing problems, dizziness, or severe swelling. If you are unsure whether a reaction is serious, treat it as an emergency and follow your allergy action plan.

Getting Diagnosed and Managing Food and Product Triggers

A healthcare provider or allergist uses your symptom history, food timing, tick exposure, and test results to evaluate AGS. Management usually involves avoiding personal triggers and preparing for accidental exposure.

Medicines, Vaccines, and Individualized Care

Some medicines and medical products may contain mammalian-derived ingredients. Rare reactions have been reported with cetuximab, gelatin-containing products, and certain vaccines, so tell your healthcare team about your diagnosis before treatment.

Do not start oral immunotherapy or another form of immunotherapy on your own. Your allergist can assess whether a product is appropriate, provide an emergency plan, and explain whether your sensitivity may change over time.

Reducing Future Tick Exposure

Preventing additional tick bites may reduce the risk of further sensitization or more reactions. Protection matters at home, during yardwork, and whenever you visit wooded, brushy, or grassy areas.

Personal Protection Outdoors

Use an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET on exposed skin according to the label. Treat clothing and gear with permethrin, or choose factory-treated clothing, and avoid applying permethrin directly to your skin.

Wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and closed shoes. Stay near the center of trails, away from tall grass and dense brush, where ticks wait for passing hosts.

Tick Checks, Clothing, and Home Precautions

After outdoor activity, check your skin, children, clothing, gear, and pets. Pay close attention to the scalp, hairline, waist, groin, behind the knees, and around the ears.

Shower soon after coming indoors and wash or dry clothes as recommended. If you find an attached tick, remove it promptly with fine-tipped tweezers by grasping it close to the skin and pulling steadily.

Weather, land use, animal movement, and climate change can shift tick habitats and seasonal activity.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommend using repellents, wearing protective clothing, and checking for ticks regularly.
