Why Eight Eyes Is Common

Eight eyes give many spiders a wider field of view and better awareness of movement. In groups like black widow and house spiders, the extra eyes help them notice danger and prey even if their detailed vision is not sharp.

Some spiders break the pattern. The family caponiidae includes two-eyed spiders.

Spider eyes are often described as simple eyes, and the front pair are sometimes called ocelli. Some secondary eyes include a reflective layer called the tapetum, which improves low-light vision by bouncing light back through the eye.

Their secondary eyes detect motion well. This helps them spot prey, predators, and nearby movement even when sharp detail is limited.
