Where Dogs Pick Up Ticks

Dogs most often encounter ticks in grassy, wooded, and brush-filled environments. Some species survive indoors or in kennels.

Exposure depends on local tick habitat, season, wildlife activity, and how consistently you use prevention.

Tick Habitat Around Yards, Parks, and Trails

Ticks climb onto vegetation and wait for a dog, person, or wild animal to brush past. Tall grass, dense shrubs, fallen leaves, stone walls, and shaded trail edges provide favorable tick habitat.

Dogs pick up ticks in backyards, dog parks, hiking routes, and areas frequented by deer or rodents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests reducing contact with brush and leaf litter.

Keeping grass short, removing leaves, and creating a clear barrier between lawns and wooded areas reduces exposure near your home.

How Ticks Reach the Coat and Find Skin

Ticks do not jump or fly. They crawl onto a dog’s legs or coat, then move through the fur until they find exposed skin.

A tick may remain hidden for hours before attaching, so a dog can bring an unattached parasite indoors after a short walk. Check the coat with your hands or a flea and tick comb, paying close attention to the ears, under the collar, armpits, groin, between toes, and around the tail.

Indoor and Kennel Exposure

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, infests homes, shelters, boarding facilities, and kennels. Unlike many dog ticks that depend heavily on outdoor habitat, this species completes parts of its life cycle indoors.

People, cats, wildlife, and other pets also carry unattached ticks inside. If you find multiple ticks, inspect your dog’s sleeping area and contact your veterinarian or a qualified pest professional for guidance.

Tick Types and Risks by Location

Different tick species live in different regions and transmit different pathogens. Identifying a tick helps your veterinarian assess risks such as Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, tularemia, and tick paralysis.

Blacklegged and Deer Ticks

The deer tick, also called the blacklegged tick, is known scientifically as Ixodes scapularis. It occurs widely in the eastern and central United States and favors wooded areas, leaf litter, and humid ground cover.

Blacklegged ticks can transmit Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium associated with Lyme disease. Dogs may develop fever, lethargy, swollen joints, shifting-leg lameness, or kidney complications such as Lyme nephritis, though some infected dogs show no obvious signs.

American Dog Ticks and Lone Star Ticks

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, commonly lives in grassy and brushy areas. It can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia, and it is associated with tick paralysis in some circumstances.

The Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is common in the Southeast and parts of the East and Midwest. It can transmit ehrlichiosis and may attach in hidden locations around the neck, ears, and mucous membranes.

Why Tick Species Matter

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, may spread ehrlichiosis and thrive in warm indoor environments. Other regional species can transmit anaplasmosis, babesiosis, or additional infections.

Save the tick in a sealed container or take a clear photograph if you can, then share the information with your veterinarian.

What to Do After Finding a Tick

Finding a tick does not automatically mean your dog will become ill. Look for attachment, remove the parasite carefully, clean the area, and monitor your dog for changes.

Signs a Tick Is Attached

An attached tick may look like a small dark or gray bump, while an engorged tick can appear rounded and swollen after feeding. Your dog may scratch, lick, chew, or rub the area, and you may notice redness, a scab, or hair loss.

Possible symptoms of ticks on dogs include fever, tiredness, reduced appetite, head shaking, swollen joints, or shifting-leg lameness. Signs of illnesses such as canine ehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, bartonellosis, or hepatozoonosis may appear days or weeks after a bite.

Safe Tick Removal at Home

To remove a tick from a dog safely, gather fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool, gloves, antiseptic such as chlorhexidine, and a sealable container.

  1. Part the fur and grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  2. Pull upward with slow, steady pressure.
  3. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or applying petroleum jelly or alcohol to the attached tick.
  4. Clean the bite site with chlorhexidine or another pet-safe antiseptic.
  5. Place the tick in a sealed container and wash your hands.

If mouthparts appear to remain in the skin, do not dig aggressively. Ask your veterinarian whether the area needs treatment.

When to Call a Veterinarian

Contact a veterinarian if you cannot remove the tick, your dog has many ticks, the bite site becomes increasingly swollen, or your dog seems painful or unwell. Seek urgent care for weakness, trouble breathing, collapse, pale gums, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Your veterinarian may recommend testing for tick-borne diseases in dogs. Depending on the situation, testing can include a complete blood count and targeted tests for organisms such as Borrelia burgdorferi, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Anaplasma platys, or Babesia.

A low platelet count can occur with some infections.

Reducing Future Tick Exposure

You can reduce risk by combining daily inspection, sensible yard care, and consistent flea and tick prevention. Your veterinarian can match a product and schedule to your dog’s age, weight, health, lifestyle, and local disease patterns.

Daily Tick Checks and Yard Care

Run your hands over your dog after walks, hikes, camping trips, and visits to dog parks. Check the ears, eyelids, collar area, neck, armpits, groin, between the toes, and around the tail.

Keep grass trimmed, clear leaf litter and brush, and place play areas away from dense vegetation. Wash bedding regularly and inspect crates, resting areas, and other pets if you find a tick indoors.

These measures support prevention, though they do not replace medication.

Veterinary-Guided Preventive Options

The Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round parasite control based on regional risk. Your veterinarian may discuss oral products such as NexGard, Simparica, Bravecto, or Credelio, or combination products such as NexGard Plus and Simparica Trio.

Topical options may include Frontline Plus or K9 Advantix II, while collars such as Seresto use active ingredients including flumethrin and imidacloprid. Ingredients vary by product and may include afoxolaner, sarolaner, lotilaner, fluralaner, fipronil, permethrin, or imidacloprid.

Follow the label precisely and never combine products without veterinary advice. A Lyme disease vaccine may offer additional protection for selected dogs in areas where Lyme disease is common.

Extra Precautions for Cats and High-Risk Dogs

Never apply a dog product containing permethrin to a cat. Some ingredients that are safe for dogs can be dangerous or fatal to cats.

Keep cats away from recently treated dogs when the label requires separation.

Dogs that hike, hunt, board, live near wooded areas, or have previous tick-borne disease need especially consistent protection. They may also need more frequent tick checks.
