When you imagine a giraffe throwing up, maybe you picture it bending over and retching like a person. The reality? It’s much stranger. If a giraffe “throws up,” what’s really happening is regurgitation—cud from the fourth stomach moves back up toward the mouth, but it rarely comes all the way out like human vomit. Their…
Giraffes usually keep their distance. But if one attacks, you need to protect yourself quickly and try to stay calm. Move away from the giraffe’s legs. If possible, get behind something solid, and cover your head and neck to lower your risk of serious injury. Stay alert for warning signs—honestly, that’s your best bet for…
You might think giraffes never lie down, but actually, they do—just not for long and not very often. Giraffes sleep standing up most of the time, but sometimes they tuck their legs under and lie down for quick, vulnerable naps if they feel safe. Most of their sleep happens while standing. Giraffes squeeze in short…
You might picture a giraffe as way too tall or fragile to lower its head, but that’s not really the case. Giraffes actually put their heads down when they need to. They bend their knees and fold their legs, dropping their bodies so their necks can reach the ground for drinking, grazing, or even a…
Ever imagined sitting up on a giraffe, legs swinging as the savanna rolls by beneath you? It sounds wild and kind of exciting, right? Most people assume giraffes are always gentle, but that’s not really true. When a giraffe gets mad, you’ll spot some obvious signs. They swing their necks loudly, throw head butts with those bony ossicones, and stiffen up to show who’s boss or to protect themselves. When a giraffe loses its cool, it often “neck fights”—it’ll…

They need massive space, special housing, expensive permits, and expert veterinary care. Keeping a giraffe safely—and legally—is way beyond what most people can handle. Curious about what daily life with a giraffe would actually look…
You might think giraffes are all neck and no brain, but honestly, they can surprise you. Giraffes show clear signs of problem solving, social memory, and even basic statistical reasoning—so they’re smarter than their small brain size suggests. Let’s look at how they make choices, remember others, and move through their social world. Scientists have…
Ever wondered why that giraffe joke claims they take forever to say sorry? They take so long to apologize because it “takes them a long time to swallow their pride.” It’s a goofy way to tie a giraffe’s long neck to the idea of holding onto pride. That punchline is simple, and honestly, it’s pretty…
You can sometimes feed and touch a giraffe if staff supervise, but don’t expect to pet one like you would a dog. At zoos or safari parks that offer close encounters, handlers might let you gently touch a giraffe’s neck or nose—if the animal seems calm and the staff stays in control. Handlers set rules…
