This tick can transmit Colorado tick fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and tularemia. The American dog tick, or Dermacentor variabilis, is also reported in Colorado.
It commonly feeds on dogs, people, and other mammals. Its brown body and mottled shield can resemble the Rocky Mountain wood tick, so precise identification may require a clear photograph or laboratory assistance.
Dog-Associated and Wildlife-Associated Species
The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, can live around kennels, homes, and other indoor environments. It has a reddish-brown body without the ornate markings seen on many dog ticks and may spread Rocky Mountain spotted fever or canine pathogens.
Other Colorado records include the winter tick, Dermacentor albipictus, rabbit tick, Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, ear tick, Otobius lagophilus, and soft ticks such as Ornithodoros hermsi. These species are generally linked more closely with wildlife, livestock, nests, or rustic structures than with routine human encounters.
Soft Ticks in Rodent-Associated Cabins
Soft ticks may inhabit cracks, wall voids, bedding areas, or rodent nests in rustic cabins. Ornithodoros hermsi lives in coniferous mountain cabins where rodents are present and can transmit tick-borne relapsing fever.
If you develop a sudden fever after staying in a rustic, rodent-infested cabin, tell a clinician about the exposure. The tick may feed briefly at night, so you might not find an attached tick.
Ticks More Common Outside Colorado
The deer tick, also called the blacklegged tick or black-legged tick, is Ixodes scapularis. It is not established broadly across Colorado, and Colorado is not considered a primary Lyme disease region.
The western blacklegged tick, Ixodes pacificus, is more associated with the Pacific Coast. The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is not established in current Colorado county surveillance.
It is more common in the eastern and southern United States. Tick ranges can change, so unusual specimens deserve careful identification rather than assumptions based only on location.

How to Prevent Tick Bites Outdoors and at Home
Wear long pants and closed shoes, tuck pants into socks, and choose light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to see. Apply an EPA-registered tick repellent according to its label.
