Warmer Winters, Snow Cover, and Climate Change

How to Reduce Your Risk Outdoors

You can lower exposure during camping, hiking, gardening, and walks by combining physical barriers, repellents, trail habits, and routine checks. These steps also help you find and remove a tick before it has more time to attach.

Clothing, Repellents, and Trail Habits

Wear long pants, long sleeves, socks, and light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to see. Tuck your pants into your socks when walking through brush or tall grass.

Stay near the center of maintained trails when possible. Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label.

DEET can protect exposed skin, while permethrin-treated clothing offers another barrier. Avoid brushing against leaf litter, shrubs, and tall vegetation where ticks wait for passing hosts.

Tick Checks, Showering, and Laundry

Check your body soon after coming indoors, including your legs, waist, underarms, scalp, and the areas behind your ears. Examine children, clothing, gear, and pets as well.

Showering can remove unattached ticks and helps you perform a careful inspection. When the fabric allows, place worn clothing in a hot dryer before washing.

Safe Tick Removal And When To Seek Care

Use clean, fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick close to your skin. Pull upward steadily.

Clean the bite and your hands with soap and water or alcohol. Do not burn, twist, smother, or crush an attached tick.

Record the date, location, and appearance of the tick if you can. Contact a healthcare professional if you develop fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, rash, unusual fatigue, facial weakness, or joint symptoms after a tick bite.

Ask a healthcare professional whether preventive antibiotics are appropriate. Never use leftover antibiotics without medical guidance.
