The water surface acts like a stretched skin when it is calm. For a spider, that thin skin can support weight without the animal sinking right away.

Fishing spiders rely on this effect, along with their body design, to move across the top of the water.

Surface tension helps a spider stay up. A spider pushes down just enough to make small dimples in the surface, and the water’s resistance helps hold those dimples in place.

A spider’s leg spread helps lower pressure on any one point of the water. It spreads its weight over many contact points.

That wider stance makes it easier to walk on top of the surface without breaking through, especially for larger spiders like fishing spiders.

Water-walking spiders use ripples to find prey, row across the surface with quick leg strokes, and strike at insects or small animals near the waterline.

How Ripples And Vibrations Reveal Prey

Spiders such as dolomedes and species like Dolomedes triton and Dolomedes tenebrosus can sense tiny ripples made by struggling prey. Those vibrations travel across the surface, giving the spider a map of movement.

That makes fishing spiders, including the spotted fishing spider, dark fishing spider, and giant fishing spider, effective hunters in ponds, marshes, and slow streams.

Skimming, Rowing, And Brief Diving Behavior

Fishing spiders and other aquatic spiders usually move by rowing their legs against the water surface. Britannica notes that they create dimples and push the water backward, which moves the spider forward.

Some can also dip below the surface for a short time, then return to the top when needed.

What They Catch At The Water’s Edge

These spiders often catch insects that fall onto the water. Some also grab tadpoles or small fish when the chance appears.

Their hunting style works best at the edge of reeds, leaves, and still water, where prey is more likely to land or struggle.

Which Spiders Are Most Closely Tied To Water

Not every spider that lives near water can truly walk on it. The strongest water ties belong to a few groups that have specialized bodies, hunting styles, or underwater homes.

Fishing Spiders And Raft Spiders

Fishing spiders and raft spiders are among the best-known surface walkers. Species such as Dolomedes fimbriatus use the water’s surface to travel and hunt.

Their legs and body shape help them stay balanced. BioOne notes that water-surface movement is especially linked to spiders in groups like the Pisauridae, which includes fishing spiders and nursery web spiders.

The Underwater Specialist Argyroneta aquatica

The true water spider, Argyroneta aquatica, is different from the surface walkers. People also call it the diving bell spider because it builds a diving bell and lives mostly underwater.

Unlike fishing spiders, it does not spend its time hunting on the surface.

Other Water-Associated Spiders Readers May Spot

You may also see nursery web spiders and longjawed orbweavers in the genus Tetragnatha near water.

Some wolf spiders live close to water as well.

These spiders may cross water, skim short distances, or stay close to wet habitats, even if they are not as specialized as aquatic spiders or raft spiders.
