Ticks are parasitic arachnids. Adult females lay eggs in protected places such as leaf litter, soil, and vegetation.

They do not fly or jump. Ticks wait for a passing host, including wildlife, pets, livestock, or people, then attach and feed on blood.

Where Ticks Come From: Life Cycle, Habitats, And Hosts

Tick populations and the risk of disease transmission depend on their life cycle, habitat, and hosts. These factors influence where ticks thrive near trails, yards, and homes.

The Tick Life Cycle

A tick develops through the egg, larva, nymph, and adult stages. Each active stage needs a blood meal from a mammal, bird, rodent, pet, or livestock.

After feeding, an adult female lays eggs in sheltered ground cover and dies. The eggs hatch into six-legged larvae, sometimes called seed ticks.

A larva feeds, then molts into an eight-legged nymph. Another blood meal allows the nymph to mature into an adult.

Hard ticks may follow one-host, two-host, or three-host patterns. In a three-host cycle, each stage feeds on a different animal and the cycle can take several seasons.

Blood Meals

Ticks need blood to grow, molt, reproduce, and produce eggs. A larva may feed on a small rodent or bird, while a nymph or adult may use a larger mammal.

A host can pass a pathogen to a feeding tick, which may transmit that pathogen during a later meal. Ticks spread bacteria, viruses, and parasites through feeding.

How Wildlife, Pets, And People Move Ticks

Rodents and birds maintain local tick populations. Deer and other mammals transport some species across larger areas.

Migratory birds can carry ticks into new regions during seasonal movement. Pets and domestic animals may bring attached ticks indoors or into yards.

People can move ticks on clothing, gear, or firewood, even if no tick remains attached.

Habitats That Support Tick Populations

Ticks thrive in habitats with shade, moisture, vegetation, and regular access to hosts. Leaf litter, shrubs, tall grass, and woodland edges offer these conditions.

Ticks lose moisture easily, so many species shelter beneath leaf litter, fallen branches, and dense ground cover. Tall grass and shrubs provide climbing surfaces and protection from sun and wind.

Yards can support tick habitats when they border woods, contain unmanaged vegetation, or attract rodents and deer. Mowing, removing leaves, and trimming brush can reduce suitable hiding places.

Questing Along Trails And Yard Edges

During questing, a tick climbs vegetation and extends its front legs, sensing heat, odor, moisture, and movement from a passing host. Ticks do not leap from trees.

Contact usually happens when you brush against grass, shrubs, or low vegetation. Trail margins, stone walls, woodpiles, and lawn edges can concentrate both ticks and hosts.

Staying near the center of maintained trails reduces contact with vegetation.

Weather, Seasons, And Climate

Warm, humid conditions support tick activity. Very dry weather can limit survival.

Risk varies by species and region. Ticks may be active during mild winter days as well as spring and summer.

Climate change can alter temperature, moisture, host behavior, and the range of some tick species. Exposure can occur year-round, with greater activity during warmer months.

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, can complete much of its life cycle indoors. Kennels, homes, and animal shelters may provide suitable conditions even when outdoor weather is unfavorable.

Common U.S. Ticks And Health Risks

Different U.S. tick species occupy different regions and feed on different hosts. They may carry pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, or parasites linked to tick-borne diseases.

These diseases include Lyme disease, spotted fever, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis.

Blacklegged And Deer Ticks

The blacklegged tick, often called the deer tick, belongs to the genus Ixodes. In the eastern and central United States, it can transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.

In parts of the West, western blacklegged ticks can also transmit Lyme disease. Possible symptoms include fever, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and a rash.

Dog Ticks, Lone Star Ticks, And Regional Species

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, other spotted fever group infections, and tularemia. The Rocky Mountain wood tick is associated with parts of the western United States and can transmit Colorado tick fever and, rarely, cause tick paralysis.

Lone star ticks, in the genus Amblyomma, occur widely across the South, East, and Midwest. They can transmit ehrlichiosis, tularemia, Bourbon virus, Heartland virus, and STARI.

Bites may also trigger alpha-gal syndrome, an allergy to certain mammalian products. Other regional ticks include species in the genera Haemaphysalis and Rhipicephalus.

A tick’s appearance alone cannot confirm whether it carries a pathogen. Save it for identification when possible.

When To Seek Medical Attention

Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Watch for an expanding rash, fever, chills, severe headache, unusual tiredness, muscle aches, swollen joints, or other new symptoms in the days or weeks afterward.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, facial weakness, severe illness, confusion, progressive weakness, or signs of tick paralysis. Contact a clinician after a bite if you live in or visited an area where Lyme disease or another tickborne disease is common.

Check warm, moist areas such as the scalp, underarms, groin, and behind the knees.

Reducing Exposure Around Home And Outdoors

You can lower contact with ticks by changing the habitat around your home, using proven protection before outdoor activity, and checking for attached ticks afterward.

These steps also reduce opportunities for pets and wildlife to move ticks indoors.

Make Yards Less Tick-Friendly

Keep grass short, clear leaf litter, and trim dense shrubs near play areas and patios. Create a dry, maintained barrier of gravel or wood chips between lawns and wooded edges, and move woodpiles away from the house.

Reduce conditions that attract rodents and deer by securing trash, limiting brush piles, and choosing plants that do not encourage frequent wildlife visits. Use targeted treatments as directed and follow local regulations.

Protect People And Pets Before Going Outside

Wear light-colored clothing so ticks are easier to spot. Tuck pants into socks and stay on maintained trails rather than brushing against tall grass or shrubs.

Use an EPA-registered repellent as directed. Consider clothing treated with permethrin for outdoor activities.

Ask your veterinarian about tick prevention for your pets. Check dogs and cats after outdoor time, especially around the ears, collar, toes, and between the legs.

Never apply a product to a pet unless its label specifically permits that use.

Check, Remove, And Monitor After Exposure

Inspect your skin, clothing, gear, children, and pets after spending time outdoors. Shower soon after coming inside to help find crawling ticks.

Place dry clothing in a hot dryer to kill ticks on fabric.

If you find an attached tick, use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp it close to the skin and pull upward steadily. Clean the bite area and your hands.

Record the date and location of the bite. Monitor for symptoms.
