Ticks live throughout the United States, especially in places with shade, ground cover, moisture, and wildlife.

You are most likely to encounter these arachnids along wooded trails, in leaf litter, tall grass, brush, gardens, backyards, and other areas where animals move and humidity remains relatively high.

Where Ticks Are Found in the U.S.

You can reduce tick exposure by avoiding dense vegetation when possible. Use an EPA-registered repellent, wear protective clothing, and check your body, clothing, and pets after time outdoors.

Tick habitats can exist near homes as well as in remote forests. Location alone cannot tell you whether a tick encounter is likely.

Tick distribution depends on species, season, weather, and the presence of wildlife hosts.

The CDC’s distribution information for ticks shows broad regional patterns. Local tick populations may occur beyond mapped areas.

Habitats That Create the Highest Exposure Risk

Ticks prefer areas that protect them from drying out and place them near animals that can carry them.

Woodlands, brush, tall grasses, and moisture-rich landscapes often create more exposure risk than open, dry ground.

Woodlands, Forests, and Leaf Litter

Forests and woodlands provide shade, humidity, fallen leaves, and underbrush where ticks wait for a passing host.

You may encounter ticks while hiking, hunting, gardening near wooded borders, or walking through unmanaged vegetation.

Urban parks and other urban environments are not automatically tick-free. Ticks persist wherever suitable vegetation and wildlife hosts are present, including greenways and neighborhood trails.

Wetlands, Marshes, and Moisture-Rich Areas

Wetlands and marshes support ticks because moisture and high humidity help limit dehydration.

Vegetation around streams, ponds, and damp wooded areas may create suitable habitat.

Temperature and weather conditions affect activity. Hot, dry periods may reduce surface activity, while mild, humid conditions can increase the likelihood that ticks remain active.

Why Ticks Concentrate in Certain Places

Habitat, climate, and access to wildlife hosts shape tick populations.

A regional map can show where a species occurs, but it cannot predict the exact number of ticks in your yard or the risk of a particular infection.

Wildlife Hosts That Move Ticks

Deer, rodents, birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other mammals transport ticks between habitats.

Livestock and cattle also carry ticks, while pets may bring attached ticks into your home.

Different life stages use different hosts. Nymphs often feed on small mammals and birds, while adult ticks commonly seek larger mammals, including deer and people.

Seasonal Activity and Local Conditions

Tick activity changes with temperature, moisture, and daylight.

In many parts of the country, people see more encounters during spring, summer, and fall, though some ticks remain active during mild winter periods.

Local conditions matter more than a simple calendar. A shaded, humid site may support activity when a nearby exposed area is hot and dry.

County-level tick surveillance information from the CDC can provide more useful local context than a national range map.

How Ticks Reach Homes and Pets

Ticks do not jump or fly. They wait on vegetation and transfer to a passing person, pet, or animal.

A dog can carry a brown dog tick indoors. A person may bring home a tick attached to clothing or skin.

Check pets after walks, especially around the ears, collar, toes, and between the legs.

Washing clothing and inspecting outdoor gear can help prevent an unnoticed tick from remaining indoors.

Regional Tick Species and Their Ranges

Where ticks are found depends partly on the species.

The blacklegged tick lives in much of the Northeast and Upper Midwest. Lone star and American dog ticks cover broad areas farther south and west.

Northeast and Upper Midwest

The blacklegged tick, also called the black-legged tick or deer tick, is Ixodes scapularis.

It is common in parts of New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia, Wisconsin, and the broader Northeast and Upper Midwest.

This tick can transmit Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis.

The CDC notes that the estimated range of Ixodes scapularis does not show identical abundance everywhere, so your local habitat and surveillance data still matter.

The lone star tick, Amblyomma americanum, also occurs widely across the Northeast and Midwest and may overlap with blacklegged tick habitat.

South and Mid-Atlantic

The lone star tick is widespread across the South and Mid-Atlantic. It is an aggressive biter, and its range includes wooded areas, brush, fields, and suburban landscapes.

The American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis, is widely distributed east of the Rocky Mountains.

The Gulf Coast tick, Amblyomma maculatum, occurs primarily in the Southeast, with scattered populations in other regions.

The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, occurs worldwide and is closely associated with dogs.

In the southwestern United States and along the U.S.-Mexico border, it can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Rocky Mountain States

The Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni, occurs in the Rocky Mountain states and southwestern Canada, often at elevations from about 4,000 to 10,500 feet.

You may encounter it in brushy mountain terrain, woodland edges, and areas used by wildlife.

It can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever, and tularemia.

American dog ticks also occur in limited areas west of the Rocky Mountains.

West Coast and Hawaii

The western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, lives along the West Coast, including California and Oregon.

Its habitat often includes coastal vegetation, woodland edges, chaparral, and areas with leaf litter.

The American dog tick has limited populations west of the Rocky Mountains.

The brown dog tick occurs worldwide and is present in Hawaii.

Ticks do not naturally occur in Antarctica. The tick species described by the CDC do not naturally occur in Alaska, though local distributions can change and surveillance remains important.

Reducing Risk in Tick-Prone Areas

You can lower your risk through simple habits before, during, and after outdoor activities.

Protection matters in backyards and urban parks as well as forests, fields, and trails.

Clothing and Repellents for Outdoor Time

Wear long sleeves, long pants, and closed shoes when you enter dense vegetation.

Tucking pants into socks can limit access to your legs, and light-colored clothing makes crawling ticks easier to spot.

Use an EPA-registered repellent containing DEET or picaridin according to the label.

Treat clothing and gear only with products approved for that use.

Staying near the center of maintained trails and avoiding tall grasses can also reduce contact.

Tick Checks for People and Pets

After outdoor time, check your skin, clothing, gear, and pets.

Pay close attention to the ears, scalp, armpits, groin, waist, backs of the knees, and between the toes.

Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers.

Grasp it close to the skin and pull upward steadily, then clean the bite area and your hands.

Prompt removal can reduce the chance of some forms of disease transmission.

When a Bite Needs Medical Attention

Watch for symptoms after a tick bite. These include fever, headache, fatigue, muscle aches, or a spreading rash.

Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, anaplasmosis, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, and Colorado tick fever can develop after exposure. The risk depends on the type of tick and the region.

Contact a healthcare provider if you develop symptoms, especially after visiting an area where tick-borne diseases occur. Tell the provider when and where the bite happened.

Let them know how long the tick may have been attached. Mention whether you saved the tick for identification.
