Spring brings more activity from wildlife that carry ticks between wooded areas, yards, and trails. You can encounter ticks while hiking, gardening, walking a dog, or playing near brush, even before summer arrives.

These ticks can transmit the bacteria that cause Lyme disease and other illnesses. Wooded edges, brush, stone walls, and leaf litter provide common exposure sites.

How Temperature and Humidity Affect Ticks

You can still encounter ticks at midday. Check your clothing and skin after every outdoor activity, particularly when vegetation is damp or dense.

Reducing Bite Risk After Time Outdoors

Good tick prevention works in layers. Avoid direct contact with dense vegetation, use an appropriate insect repellent, treat clothing when suitable, and perform thorough tick checks.

Repellents and Clothing Treatments

Apply an EPA-registered repellent according to its label. Products containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, often listed as OLE, can protect exposed skin when used correctly.

Permethrin-treated clothing and gear can provide additional protection. Do not apply permethrin directly to your skin, and follow product directions carefully.

Long pants, socks, and light-colored clothing can also make ticks easier to spot.

Daily Body, Clothing, and Pet Checks

Perform daily tick checks after outdoor time, including checks of children and pets. Look closely around the scalp, hairline, ears, neck, armpits, waist, groin, behind the knees, and between the toes.

Put worn clothing in a hot dryer when appropriate. Shower soon after coming indoors, and inspect backpacks and outdoor gear.

What to Do After Finding an Attached Tick

Remove an attached tick promptly with fine-tipped tweezers. Grasp it close to the skin and pull upward with steady pressure.

Clean the bite area and your hands. Avoid twisting, crushing, burning, or covering the tick with petroleum jelly.

Record the date and location of the bite. Watch for symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, or fatigue.
